IMHO, that's enough. He's said to start with small scale so he doesn't have to put up a physical store right away. He can take orders online and just use his apartment or home as his stock room for that one product that he choose to sell. It's good to start small and I think with that amount, he's already overwhelmed of what can happen to it. Make a market research first OP, I won't suggest any type of business to you. Look at what the people in your area needs, water, professional services, or any other product. As long as you can solve one existing problem there.

For people who are business minded, anything is possible. Actually, I think the amount is enough to start a small business, (this is the safest approach).

I can suggest you an online and physical store, so you have choices and you don't need to rent if the rent is high.
it's important that you put a big portion of your capital into inventory..

I suggest you take a look at food section because this attract many people to try. Uniqueness is something that you should search and not too expensive price. You can request to list your food business on an online store and don't forget to add discount to your product.

This amount is too small but then again what is the condition of your country? How about your present environment? Because there are things to consider before going into any businesses today.

If you are in a crowdy area it's better to go into a business where people will have to buy the needy, find something that people can't do without.

Most people here would prefer to start food business with this type of money, or phone parts, but in my own way I'd thinking I would rather start with smartphones or iPhone, one sold at good price will create road for two, before you know it your phones will turn 5 iPhones.

If your plan is to get a physical space for your business, then $1200 is  a bit small for a start up in most economy because you are going to factor in stuff like Shop rent, other financial requirement that will help you keep the shop in it best shape. registration and what will then be left for the items you are going to sell? by the time you must have reached the point of getting the goods you want to be selling, at least 60% of the money must have gone into other things and what can the $600 actually buy?

most times, it is better to go into a business where you are the main asset of the business. for instance if you are going into a skilled based business.it should be that you are already skilled in that field and needs little things to set up the space while you grow in it. business that succeeds is not built for a genera opinion you got from random people online. you need to sit yourself down and analyze what will work for you based on your situation.

A new start up usually needs the presence of the owner if you want it to scale, because most employees are not trust worthy nowadays and going by your initial budget you can't even hire one as that will be a financial mistake.

I can't point at any particular niche because I don't know what you are good at, but I'll suggest that any niche you finally decide, make sure your focus is online marketing. Your focus should be on utilising social media as a business hub. You can build your presence gradually and with time, patience and hardwork, you'll definitely see results. You don't even need to spend big, just make out time for few contents per day (maybe at night depending on the nature of your current job) and then watch how your business will scale significantly.

I don’t think 6 months of study or having passion for the business should be treated as a requirement. Sometimes the better approach is to start very small, test the market and learn from actual customers before committing serious money. You can have plenty of knowledge and passion for something for something that people still don’t want to buy.

You're right about studying a business before investing, but from my own opinion not all business that are meant to study for over 6 months. There people who already have passion in some business, once the capital is there for them to start up the business, all they needed is to meet those who has been same business they intend to invest so that those people will give them guard lines on how to follow up with the business. Idk how the economy looks in your country or OP's. But honestly, starting a business with that amount would be straight up impossible where Im at.

Even if it's enough to start something small I still would not do it if that's all money you have and you don't have anything set aside. Business doesn't always make money right away. It can take time to get customers and bring revenue. Putting everything you have into it can put you in a pretty bad spot if thing do not go as planned.

Cooking is one of the most profitable business anyone can start but can $1200 be able to make a kitchen set up. Remember, he is going to buy cooking utensils, gas for cooking and importantly what he is going to cook. What I have to say here is that, starting business is not just starting the business, but how far it will go and how to maintain the business. It will be good not to rush into the business, the OP should take some time to do some investigation about the business and other businesses to know which one is highly demanded and can be good to start with so that he can make money with the business.
