Hi everyone. New account, been reading for a while. I want to try one of the smaller no-KYC swap platforms for a Monero swap, but I keep finding horror threads about funds sitting "frozen by the liquidity provider" for months. Is that just how this industry works, or is it a red flag for specific platforms? What would you check before sending anything non-trivial through an instant exchange? I'd rather learn from people who've been through it than find out the expensive way. Any advice welcome.

That frozen by the liquidity provider story is a red flag to take seriously, especially if it keeps coming up for the same platform in recent unresolved complaints. Before sending anything, read the terms for the KYC and refund clauses, because some services advertise no-KYC but still reserve the right to hold a swap and demand documents once the coins are already in. I would also check who actually provides the liquidity, whether the rate and fees are shown clearly before you deposit, and whether support answers before you have a problem, not just after. Start with a small test amount you can afford to lose and only scale up if that completes cleanly and quickly.

If it's a large amount of money, why not use a big and reputable exchange? There are also no KYC swapping services. Why take the risk with a service you are not sure of? And it is the first time you want to use them. It doesn't mean it is a scam, but you also do not know if they can be trusted.
I have used small, non-KYC swap services, but it is just for small amounts. I can risk money that, even if I lose, it won't mean much to me. I haven't lost money that way before, though. If it is a small exchange that you have used and trusted, then you can go ahead, but if you don't know much about the service, and the money is large to you, then use a reputable service.

It's always better to see the user reviews of any site you want to swap your coins on.
If you do find any bad reviews, then skip that site because you won't want your funds getting stuck in those exchanges.
Better opt for sites which are reputed and have good user feedback. Better be safe than sorry.

Use these websites for your convenience and see which ones are good for that specific use you want.

  • Bitlist.co
  • orangefren.com

You can also look for those in the Service Announcements and the Exchanges for the feed back. If the swap you want to use isn't there, I better not use it.

There are good non-KYC exchanges that have reputation and can help you to have access to quick swap without any manipulation and hiding fees you might not understand. This forum has made it easy for us to access exchanges before using them through which using some platforms to check the platforms before using them.
BitList.co can be used to check several reviews on most of DEXs, and you can also use kycnot.me to check the exchanges scores so that you will know which ones are safe to use, to avoid further problems.

If you characterize them as small platfrom due to their low liquidity, your order might be delayed until they have sufficient funds to complete it.

Is that just how this industry works, or is it a red flag for specific platforms?
Yes, DEXs do carry a higher risk of settlement delays or even failures, though not all platforms share the same risk level.

- I would check whether they are transparent regarding their liquidity addresses (verifiable) and capable of settling my transaction.
- There are no checks on the legality of the source of funds, as they typically do not operate under a license.

1. Perform an AML check on your funds just to be sure they are not from illicit sources.
2. Always check out the reviews before using any of those smaller instant exchanges. This forum is rich in such information, and some of the exchange aggregators/monitors
3. Always exchange small amounts in batches instead of one huge amount.
4. Verify whether the service uses third parties as liquidity providers or not.
5. Find out if the service has security deposits in escrows in various forums or not. This helps you for compensation purposes in case there is a stuck transaction or an exit scam.
6. Avoid brand new services

Why do you need to swap on smaller exchanges? You have realized that there are too many bad news about random small exchanges. It must be enough for you to avoid random exchanges, especially small random exchanges. I myself will never try smaller exchanges, moreover if they are random small exchanges. I don't want to risk my coins although it is small number of crypto coins.

Regarding what we need to check first whenever we want try an exchange, we need to learn the reviews from the users. We must ensure the exchange is secure enough to try. If there are some bad news about the exchanges, it is better to avoid the exchanges. Especially if the bad issues are related to the legality, security matters, and too many delay of the transactions.

.....

Why use exchanges that require AML rather than just selecting AML-free services?

To top up my crypto cards which cover my living expenses I usually do two-three swaps per day and going through AML checks each time would be time-consuming. Besides it could threaten in some extend my privacy. So I always use AML-free alternatives. In fact, there are plenty of them around. One just shouldn't be too lazy to spend a few minutes searching for them. Wink

I also agree with this, need to check their review on reputable platforms like the ones that have been mentioned here, also try to engage on your personal research to know when they have being into the business and how consistence they have been on it over the time, I will also suggest that you reach their terms and conditions before you engage for their service, while my last advice on this will be that you should first have a test run with them to see how they could deliver before you do your main swap on their platform.

A test run requires some real money.

And that's why with these websites that I have given as an example, they did it for us for the tests and what they have looked at.

But I agree that it's also better if we have our own way of seeing them run and the experience that they'll provide. With that, we'll also have our own feedback for the specific instant exchange that we'll use.

What you mean by smaller instant exchange? Low liquidity, unreputable, or barely exist for a year? we're talking about money and I wouldn't risk even a cent. Use the known no KYC platform with good reviews we have no shortage of it as already mentioned by @jossiel. Or maybe hear me out, if you only want price exposure and don't necessarily want to hold the coin, how about XMR perpetual market on perp dex like Hyperliquid? it won't ask for KYC.
