The floor is open, what do you think? Is the economy really reducing the family population?
You have presented a beautiful reality, but it does not work the same for everyone, there are some exceptions. And it is better not to take exceptions as an example. People in villages have more children than in cities, although people in villages earn less than people in cities. However, good economy and physical capacity are important behind family size, similarly, economy also works behind family size. Most educated people prefer small families and if you do a survey, the population of educated families is less. On the other hand, the population of less educated and lower class people is comparatively more. So it can be said that the effect of economy is one of the many big reasons for low population or family size/smallness. And if education and physical capacity are excluded, I think economy is the reason.

I think your math is a bit off there. Eight slices for eight kids, plus one for you? That is nine people. Someone's going hungry! But I get the point.

Yes, I agree that the economy is involved. But low wages are not the only factor. And there is no guarantee people's jobs will still be there next year. People do not plan on an 18 year commitment if they cannot see 2 years ahead. Uncertainty is the word I want to focus on the most.

By the time people can afford a bigger place, fertility has already started to drop. Some end up with just one kid simply because they started later in life.

A couple of generations ago, you had grandma a couple doors down. Neighbors would watch over each other's kids for free. Now you pay for all of that.

Some people make an active decision to have fewer or no children to live a different life. That is still a decision, and nobody forced it. Calling it purely economic erases the agency many have in this.

I think it is a mix of fear and freedom. The former (fear) could be addressed with cheaper housing and more robust government-supported childcare. Freedom (the choice to have fewer or no children) may not be something governments can affect. And maybe they should not?
