If Bitcoin could keep it so that everyone can mine fairly with an ordinary computer, then I think Bitcoin would definitely be a very successful blockchain. And if its throughput were a bit higher.
Why? Isn't Bitcoin a successful blockchain with its mining system? The mining system has also been designed with all the calculations so that Bitcoin technology can survive in all kinds of environments.

For example if the number of miners increases a lot Bitcoin mining will become much harder and not everyone will do it because the mining rewards will be very low compared to the power and device required. As a result only those who can afford to mine profitably will mine.

On the other hand when the number of miners decreases a lot for some reason the difficulty will also decrease allowing miners to receive good payments and more new miners will come forward to start mining. So everything moves automatically from normal computer to specialized hardware ASICs which make Bitcoin network more secure.

If Bitcoin keep the system, we never see the price rise. Many people will get their Bitcoin easily by mine but Bitcoin will not be like today. The scarce is the thing that make Bitcoin priceless and makes people chase it.

The ordinary computer can't mine because the algorithm change and needs specific hardware to mine. The difficulty change timely so ordinary computer can't solve the difficulty.
The scarcity in this situation would continue, there is nothing that we can do about that. We need to realize that we can't really consider this as a big deal. Think about it: the miners would still mine, it would just be different miners.

Instead of huge companies with insane bitcoin mining farms, it would be all of us equally farming with our pc if we want to. And that means while the hashrate would be lower, it would mean instead of 10 companies ruling the entire landscape, we would have tens of millions of people making smaller returns, but good for regular people. Think about making like 10 dollars per day for having your PC open. Now that is not good enough reason to have a PC and open it, because electricity would probably be that much at least. But if you already have your PC open, then why not?

Are you one of those fans who wants equality in Bitcoin? Because that's how I see it. But why do you guys keep questioning something that Satoshi designed so well. He designed Bitcoin that way with a lot of consideration, it wasn't just random. So before you even thought about it, he had already thought it through. I don't think you're smarter than Satoshi --- so just enjoy Bitcoin for now.

So everything moves automatically from normal computer to specialized hardware ASICs which make Bitcoin network more secure.
Just like how the theory of evolution begins, Bitcoin miners realized that using CPUs and GPUs wasn't sufficient until ASICs came onboard, which has more power and does more work efficiently and specifically for mining with little energy consumption per hash.

These days, mining has become more specialized and more capital demanding that even countries, big organizations and big pocket investors use bigger facilities with special energy sources just to be more productive and efficient and this meant the near death of personal home CPUs which do so little with less results.
