People in different places usually choose secondhand products instead of new ones. Tailoring it down to vehicle, between secondhand vehicles and new vehicles which one is mostly purchased yearly? Saving some money upfront can be a reason but aside that, what is the actually reason or financial logic, depreciation math or what?
Financial management is the obvious reason or in some cases Financial constraints is actually the main reason why people go for second hand products, they purchase these products not because it's what they really want but they say the available becomes the desirable in such cases.  Between a secondhand vehicle and a new one the mostly purchased yearly depends on the country you live in because in some countries getting a new car isn't a big deal.

The total cost of ownership is one key element. Rather than the price of the equipment. A used car can have already suffered the greatest depreciations. So the next buyer can obtain the same or comparable features for a reduced price. Repairs. Fuel economy and maintenance may diminish these savings.
The problem a lot of people have when deciding on getting a fairly used car is that they only consider how cheap the price is and not the durability of the car, that's the reason they buy a vehicle at a cheap rate but they spend almost the same amount of money on maintenance in the long run.

Like alot of people has already said, the fundamental reason for going for a second hand unit is because of price and economic standing of the individual and the preferred taste of the those with the financial means. For example with the annual release of a new IPhone or other high end devices, some people will feel there is no need to go back for back every year to get the new one, they will wait for the next year to get the new release at a cheaper price when the financially able have already dumped the previous one, it's extremely workable and it cuts cost

Or if you have the old model, then sell it at a cheaper price and get the latest model and the cycle goes on and one. In the Philippines, it's a well known strategy to just buy second hand products. But you have to be very careful on the items that are being sold in the market place.

You should test the item first and test if everything is working otherwise there might be an issue that the seller is not saying. We have a lot of cases here specially with cars, that after someone paid for it and bring it home, suddenly the car broke down and then the seller says that it is what is it and he doesn't have any accountability of it as the buyer paid for it already.

One reason I think people choose second hand cars is that people care more about the value they get for their money than whether the car is brand new. A new car may give you peace of mind but that peace definitely comes at a price especially when you consider how quickly some cars lose value in their first few years.

The most important thing is knowing what you are buying because a cheap car with hidden problems can easily become more expensive than a new one.

I don't know how you came to the conclusion that people prefer secondhand products over new ones. Nobody prefers secondhand products, it is only due to financial circumstances or inability to afford it new that they go for secondhand because they also want to enjoy same benefit of owning that thing at a price that fits their financial situation.

Though there are cases where people have no choice but to buy secondhand products even when they can afford new ones. Like high end or luxury hyper cars with limited edition that are hard to find. So early prospective buyers purchase, use and resell the few ones. And that’s how it circulates as secondhand.

In my country Nigeria alot people prefer buying secondhand products because they are certain Nigerians that imports fake products that doesn't last for long time and sell them in a huge amounts of money. Some are trying not to involve themselves of buying fake products.
Example electronic devices.

The newness of any item is an extremely fleeting thing: the moment you buy something new, it ceases to be new. Smiley

Tailoring it down to vehicle, between secondhand vehicles and new vehicles which one is mostly purchased yearly?
More secondhand cars are being purchased, and the volume of such sales is growing year by year. In my country, the purchase of secondhand cars by citizens has increased relative to new ones over the past 2 years (~ 4 times as many used cars were bought in 2024, and 5 times as many in 2025).

Saving some money upfront can be a reason but aside that, what is the actually reason or financial logic, depreciation math or what?
It comes down to the standard of living, specifically, financial means and the country's economic strength. The ratio of used to new car purchases certainly varies from country to country. However, in developing nations like mine, people buy used cars because they can't afford new ones. Ask yourself this: if you could buy something brand new, would you choose to buy it used instead? Of course not. Used cars are expensive to maintain; they require more frequent repairs and financial outlays. So why buy something that is inherently inferior to a new vehicle? The answer is clear: it is a matter of saving money or lacking the funds to purchase a new car outright.

Also, don't overlook the availability of auto loans; a portion of new cars are purchased on credit (debt), which itself signals a lack of funds to pay the full price upfront.

Also ,  buying used doesn't mean you are always getting the genuine thing. You could still end up with fake, or something that's been repaired or had parts replaced without seller telling you . Buying secondhand comes with quite few  risk , especially when it comes to  bigname brand.
You are right. That is why I say it depends. Even second-hand products are not always safe, as the seller might not be honest about their condition. Brand-new products have their own risks because even trusted brands now have fake versions. These can be difficult to distinguish from genuine products. That is why one has to be careful or, better still, involve someone who has the knowledge to distinguish genuine products from counterfeits. This will help one avoid being cheated, regardless of which option one chooses.

My friend, who is a normal girl, never uses second hand products because she has a habit of using new things even if their price is 3 times more. But I think if you have money, you can use brand ones. If you are also getting a used thing that fulfills your need, then don't spend too much money. Branded things are good, their quality is better because there is no adulteration and more effort is put into it, that is why its price is higher. Those who use second hand things do it by keeping in mind their expenses, in addition, these things are available at a lower price and now these things are also being improved and the price remains the same. Those who get second hand things even if they are used, should take comfort in it and those who want new things or want to invest money go towards new things.

With this kind of question, there’s no way you can answer for others what they like, because people have reasons why they choose either secondhand or a brand-new vehicle, but for me, personally I prefer new vehicle and one of my reason is that buying brand new vehicle may give me peace of mind than secondhand ones, but that doesn’t mean is best financially decision for everyone, because everyone knows how they actually make their money and what they earn, so it good to make good financial decisions, sometimes is not that you can’t afford to buy new vehicles, but maintenance matters, I also don’t blame those who go for secondhand ones, definitely they may have their reasons for that.

The only problem I have with secondhand vehicles is hidden problems, that sometimes difficult to notice while buying it, and the seller refuses to tell the buyer, that’s why i still prefer brand-New than secondhand ones.

Who has ever heard the saying that a miser pays twice? This is exactly what is being discussed here. What attracts a buyer to a used car instead of a new one? Simply the low price.". Sometimes sellers of used things, and this happens in my country, deliberately embellish their old things in order to add value to what, in principle, should have been thrown in the trash long ago. And yes, poor people who do not have the opportunity to buy new things are deceived by their appearance and subsequently pay more for the repair of used equipment in the equal to the price of a new car.

Therefore, I would not generalize about the fact that many people prefer to buy used items. Wise people do not succumb to the illusion of low prices; one way or another, a new thing, a new car will always remain a priority.

Internal combustion engines always have a market even if it is pretty much old, I had seen people in Africa importing cars that are 20 years old and repair it and runs it, maybe the financial situation is forcing them to do it. But as I said previously, it is better to buy a $ 30K new car in brand-new condition rather than be deceived by a luxury brand that is worth 100K is sold at 50K after 3 years.

Imagine they have to replace the whole exhaust and suspension, then tyres obviously, which will cost around 15K for sure. Cheesy

In many places, the second-hand market really is a bit of a minefield. Crooked sellers have all the shopping techniques down to conceal significant damage and serious flaws, exploiting those who are hoping to get their dollars' worth out of the tight household budget. When customers buy a seemingly viable product with their carefully saved-for dollars and it costs them the equivalent of a new product in repairs, the saving just isn't worth it anymore and becomes an expensive trap.

But it need not be necessarily so. As a general rule, I find that you really need to be an expert on the thing you are buying in order to properly judge its condition and true value. As far as buying a used car goes, for example, I normally wouldn't buy anything without an owner I knew. If I buy from someone who I know has properly looked after a car, and not trashed it, the risk of a bad deal is much less. If I can't do that, I tend to take along an expert mechanic friend who can spot the faults that my non-mechanical eyes might miss. That strategy has never let me down and I've never bought something that wasn't a good experience. Except for maybe a few products I bought from an online classifieds site. But those were mostly low-value items I was willing to take a risk on.

People just simply go for what they can afford and when it comes to secondhand products like a vehicle this is something that depreciates in value and efficiency, you cannot expect a fairly used car to be as good as a new one but this still depends on how long it was used by the previous owner and how it was maintained as well. Statically I think fairly used vehicles is mostly purchased due to the economic situation.

My friend, who is a normal girl, never uses second hand products because she has a habit of using new things even if their price is 3 times more. But I think if you have money, you can use brand ones. If you are also getting a used thing that fulfills your need, then don't spend too much money.
Is it really an habit or she just has the money to buy whatever she wants? I don't think anyone that's struggling financially can have such habit because you cannot give what you don't have. It is important to do things within your capacity or means, it makes like less complicated.

Variant answers indeed, and it varies widely between countries. Like in some countries today, more than or up to 80 phones out of 100 that you will find in some particular regions are secondhand phones and this makes dealing on secondhand phones a major market and this is basically because of affordability. Some governments are in serious support of secondhand products while some governments have restrictions on secondhand products, by that, government policies can also be a catapult to the purchase of secondhand products.
As for secondhand cars, it's a multi trillion dollar industry and a global brand.
Governments that encourage second-hand products should also be ready to accept the challenges that come with it.  Some of these developing nations are seeking an avenue to dispose of some of their used products. These nations might end up becoming a dumping ground for developed countries. The flow of secondhand products into some countries could also affect local industries negatively. Local industry might end up having poor patronage because people would prefer to buy cheap second-hand materials instead of buying from them.

Second hand products do not mean spoiled but economical. Again, not all second hand products are good so you have to be careful about this. I don't know why other people buy second hand products but most people buy them to save money. There are also many who do not have enough money to buy any product, so they plan to buy second hand products.

Personally, I do not like buying second hand products very much. If a relative sells second hand products and if I need them, I try to buy them. Why from relatives? Because from them you can know about the quality of the product.

Buying of secondhand things is not just about saving some money but a more realistic way for the working class people to survive in this global inflation, so it is more like an economic survival mode for them. Because at the rate at which things are now, you just can't walk into a store for gadgets and buy a brand new one if you survive on a basic salary, neither can you afford to by a brand new car when the prices double almost every few months. But buying a neatly used item or product will at least give you  80 percent feel of the exact same product as if it were new and less than half the initial price. As long as you have good eyes to do some proper checking before paying.

There is no way second-hand products are stronger and more durable than brand new ones. Products have a year warranty for a reason. People purchase secondhand products for the price not durability. It is the same reason why people buy dupes instead of designer perfumes or buy knock-offs instead of designer clothes.
That's a fact, durability is the main reason why people go for cheaper products, for most of them they do this so that they can save money. It is self deceit to say that old or secondhand products are stronger than brand new ones, it's like saying that a second hand car is as good as a new one but that's not really the case because the performance level of that car cannot really be the same with a new one.

The danger of this is that the old products might require more money for maintenance and repairs due to how faulty they have gotten and if you calculate what you spend on maintaining them you'd be surprised.

Finance is the main factor here because most times the prices can’t even be compared. Because an item automatically looses its value once it is purchased and unboxed.

But if we’re looking for different factors first I’ll say sometimes there’s no significant difference between the brand new and the fairly used, let’s take an example from gadgets. There is Whats they call London use which is still second hand, most times when you put the carton away, sometimes there’s no significant difference between the brand new and the second hand so why waste money.

Another factor can be scarcity, products dp go out of stock, sometimes not because of low purchases but an upgrade, and some customers will still want to stick with the one they’ve known.

And the most I can relate to is opportunities, a situation where you have no plans of purchasing a specific product, but a dude wants to sell theirs out, sometimes you don’t even need them for the moment but you just end up purchasing them as they could be useful someday.

I also don’t believe that people who buy second hand products do so because they are environmentally conscious. Let’s be honest, if it was truly about the environment, they would buy recycled clothes rather than purchase cheaper and in some cases inferior products which end up being waste.

I suppose this market depends on where you’re from and what services/packages available to you.

From my part of the world, when it comes to vehicles or even vehicle parts, we often go for used or secondhand ones. The reasons is simple;

When it Gomes to the vehicle in itself, we go for used ones because of the cost. Dead simple, it’s not easy working yourself out here to get a vehicle, have it shipped and be taxed the maximum by custom all the same. You would have to paid almost double the price. We found out that, the used ones are just as good, affordable and mostly in good working condition.

For the parts, the second handed products mostly comes with some trust or certainty that it indeed did come from the factory and went through all the necessary testing for quality assurance. The new ones are often substandard and don’t have the same durability as the factory made ones that did come with the vehicle.
