Cryptocurrencies have come and gone, with new ones replacing old ones over time. We've had many "gems" in the space, only to vanish due to loss of interest. As for "gems", I mean old projects (now defunct) with unique features, often driven by utility instead of hype/speculation.

Wouldn't it be great to have all of the source code and binaries of defunct cryptocurrencies in a single place? Such place would act as a "Digital Crypto Museum" for generations to enjoy. Sort of like a virtual time-capsule. Maybe the content would be stored on a decentralized CDN such as IPFS for long-term preservation? The website would just serve as the front-end interface for people to access cryptocurrency resources within IPFS.

I know that GitHub hosts most (if not all) of cryptocurrencies' repositories with their source code. But what if it gets shut down all of a sudden? That's where the "Digital Crypto Museum" comes in.

Thoughts? Huh

Cryptocurrencies have come and gone, with new ones replacing old ones over time.
And in most cases, one piece of junk just replaces another. Smiley

We've had many "gems" in the space, only to vanish due to loss of interest.
If these "gems" have vanished into oblivion, it means those projects proved useless. It’s a form of "natural selection" - dead-end branches of evolution that have withered away.

Just think about it: does humanity really need countless different cryptocurrencies? A separate coin for every single action? That’s just absurd.

As for "gems", I mean old projects (now defunct) with unique features, often driven by utility instead of hype/speculation.
If there were any real utility, these projects would have "survived". Since they failed to do so, what kind of utility are we even talking about?

Wouldn't it be great to have all of the source code and binaries of defunct cryptocurrencies in a single place? Such place would act as a "Digital Crypto Museum" for generations to enjoy.
Why bother? Future generations will be able to create more technologically advanced source code (with the help of AI). After all, you don’t use software from the 80s, do you? In the same way, these "gems" will end up being (or already are) obsolete.

Sort of like a virtual time-capsule. Maybe the content would be stored on a decentralized CDN such as IPFS for long-term preservation? The website would just serve as the front-end interface for people to access cryptocurrency resources within IPFS.
Why create yet another dump for useless trash that nobody needs? Smiley

I know that GitHub hosts most (if not all) of cryptocurrencies' repositories with their source code. But what if it gets shut down all of a sudden? That's where the "Digital Crypto Museum" comes in.

Thoughts? Huh
I suppose if someone has nothing better to do, they could start bringing your idea to life. Smiley

Actually, a museum of this kind (with partial functionality) already exists - take coinmarketcap (or something similar), for example.

Only real projects and are still surviving should be given that right and not garbages that was created to scam people through pump and dump. It means that you're hyping and supporting the actions of the shitcoins devs that have made a lot of genuine investors lose money in the market.

Is that the line you want our younger generation to follow. If they have real utility why didn't they survive till now. Only bitcoin deserves such VIP treats so that, our younger generation can understand how fucked up the fiat system is.

I really like this idea. I've been in the crypto space only recently (2019), and have seen a lot of those "classic" (according to me) tokens from 2019-2022, but they are no longer in fashion and have been replaced. Today, I still have some memories of them, and I do wish that I had been smarter and/or learnt what they do at that time.

in the crypto space, I think by 2030, we would have thousands (if not tens of thousands) come and go.

Perhaps, another idea is to have a Crypto Digital Museum for those which would ever Top 50 in Marketcap at one point.

I wasn't thinking of the source code, but the dead NFT marketplace is already a good digital crypto museum. We'll see those highly in-demand NFTs before like the BAYC, and then the other NFTs that were once valued so much but now they've got no value anymore. I searched for those kind of websites but they're only listing the name of the projects and what type they were.

Thoughts? Huh

Not thinking at the moment about the value of such a project, merely about the size of it and the work it would involve.

Honestly, its pretty hard to believe just how much dead junk you wold have to scrape.  Think thousands of abandoned Bitcoin forks all the way back to 2013 taht nobody even remembers, half of which had broken wallet builds, dead seed nodes, repos that disappeared over night when devs rage-quit and deleted their accounts...

I cannot imagine anyone doing that work without some kind of financial incentive, which then raises the question of the viability of such a project.

There aren't that many so-called gems that vanished. What we have is what flooded the community, which are scams and hype coins and tokens that should be forgotten, because they will bring up negative results for investors who lose money from these types of coins and tokens.

I support this idea. I hope there's a venture that will conceive this idea for the future generation. In the future, there will be people, a community or a group that will look for tokens and coins that existed when Cryptocurrency was just starting out, and I guess this is the right time to create something like this, because we know that Cryptocurrency is here to stay.

Don't you think it's a bit too late for this? Many of the coins in the golden years are already gone, their website, their code roadmap, and their whitepaper.

Although we can extract some of them on GitHub or on CoinMarketCap, the complete details of many of the coins are gone, well, it's going to be hard work for this kind of task to retrieve them.

It's a good idea, but it needs funding and a lot of effort for retrieval. There's a possibility that some individual or group has planned this before but did not push it because of the work involved, and it's not a profitable venture.

Honestly, I don't see the reason for this initiative to be realized. However, you can start working on it if you have enough time and budget because I don't think it will have any utility until GitHub is shut down as you speculated. All of those repositories in GitHub aren't all alive with active projects. If GitHub shut down one day, the communities of active projects will move to a new app. Not sure if it is reliable to call it museum because how much useless content of useless projects can be added. And as I expect GitHub will never shut down at any time sooner, maybe better to suggest add an additional board where dead projects are listed there, and we can call it Digital Crypto Museum.

I think it would be a great idea to have a museum dedicated to everything about cryptocurrencies featuring items like the Bitcoin white paper, the early posts written by Satoshi on this forum, the Bitcoin source code, the very first mining machine created to mine Bitcoin, the white papers for various altcoins launched years ago ( such as Ethereum, Litecoin, and Dogecoin ), the origin of the term "HODL," and much more. People with an interest in technology and history could visit such a museum. I’m aware that some might argue this is pointless, given that all this information can be found online.

However, consider that while one can easily research the history of different countries, people still choose to visit museums to learn about them it’s a different experience. People enjoy getting out and interacting with others, which is why I believe they would visit a cryptocurrency museum if one existed. Personally, if there were a cryptocurrency museum in my own country, I would certainly go to see everything on display.

On top of that, whole scene is too fragmented and saturated with countless new tokens launching every day, so there are less and less "generational experiences" that everyone could remember fondly.

And i haven't even tried to keep up with new tokens for a while because i am certain it will be all just mountains of AI slop to weed trough. So i don't see how it's worth even recording, when it barely was before AI.

I have fond memories from few died projects though like what ever that ICO scam was where they just posted photos from their spa holiday and stole the money. That's worth a museum.

Yeah, why not, and for those who are not familiar, here is a start, Bitcoin’s Code Is Buried in the Arctic for 1,000 Years.

The only drawback I can see with this kind of museum, is the gathering of those projects as we all know that there are thousands of it. And the organizer might need to prioritized which one to include and which one is not.

And if some old projects are not included, their could be a uproar on the crypto community.

It's so tiring to follow the development of new coming tokens in the market. There's no sense anymore in doing that when all I got was losses instead of making some returns. And the past was even wilder because too many projects became successful at those times when we don't use the word hype yet at that time.

I have fond memories from few died projects though like what ever that ICO scam was where they just posted photos from their spa holiday and stole the money. That's worth a museum.
Funny and there were those that keeps on making tons of shitcoins and still the devs are earning from it when there are these chasers of new projects come in. It's even easier for them to list those projects now because of websites like pump.fun.

Github is already enough. The code was available and you can even recycle the dead project by yourself. So why do wee need a digital crypto museum for this? There are also plenties of sites have been storing explanations and implications related to those dead coins with the unique utilities.

However, i know there is a place that already stored thousands of crypto repositories(an aggregate repositories) called https://www.awesomecrypto.xyz/. So i think no need to create another one for that. Just make it as simple as possible.

How about storing it on the blockchain, it's going to be costly writing whole repository to the blockchain but after you wrote it once, it'll be saved for eternity. Unlike IPFS where you are still going to lose the data if there is no node that stores the file and need to do pinning on IPFS. Maybe do a fundraise to build the digital crypto musem on the blockchain because it's going to be expensive as hell, it might cost few thousand dollars just to upload a single repository to Ethereum blockchain, the better solution is cheap layer 2 blockchain like polygon.

We've had many "gems" in the space, only to vanish due to loss of interest. As for "gems", I mean old projects (now defunct) with unique features, often driven by utility instead of hype/speculation.
If the 'gems' do not exist, what is the need to keep them in a digital crypto museum? But if the contents are still being operated or continued at present despite not existing, then keeping them in the museum can be considered.

So, If their existence has faded away over time and nothing related to them currently exists or is being used or nothing will happen in the future either so planning to keep something like this in a museum seems unreasonable.
