Am inspired to come up with this topic because of the situation of this country Nigeria. Every Nigerian are testimonies that Nigeria is a country that is well blessed with numerous natural resources including oil which is now Nigeria major source of income presently. Left with natural resources alone Nigerians are not suppose to suffer, but bad governance has kept Nigeria  where it is today.
What Nigeria need is good governance, and our numerous natural resources will be useful to us. There are some other countries that don't have as much natural resources as Nigeria do but they are fairing well, and doing better than Nigeria, reason being that they have better leaders. Their leaders are innovative, and have it in mind for the growth of their country, and citizens as well.
When the leadership of any country is good every thing goes smoothly, even when they don't have enough resources to survive from, the leaders will bring investors who find their country convenient to do their business, and economic growth will be esterblished.

Presently in Nigeria, there is high rate of insecurity, inflation, and economic hardship, and all is caused by bad rulership. No investor would like to esterblish where their is high level of insecurity even with our numerous natural resources.
We need leaders that will make Nigeria great, and bring it to a great country that Nigeria is suppose to be. A country can grow even without many natural resources, but when the leaders only care about what they will achieve, the economy is bound to crash.

What is your take on this?

My take on this is that all of us should get our voter cards ready to vote for someone we truly believe has the interest of the people at hand. We can say all we can and hate the present government, but power is in our hands and how reluctant some of us are also contributes to how bad this country is becoming.

Natural Resources we have in abundance in this country, not just oil. Internally generated revenue is also not small. Bad governance is indeed what kept us in this country's position that we are now, but a good government with resources to work with might not actually be able to touch every aspect of the country's problem, we have the resources that will sustain the country what we need now is government that will help us adequately put it into good use.

Well, it’s no secret that bad governance has been our primary problem since we gained independence, and it’s not just at top but it’s in every sector and I think it has to do with our innate nature as Nigerians, it’s easy to criticize those at the top and blame everything on them but given the chance most of us would do the same, we are so eager to cheat one another and find it very hard to cooperate on common goals that will benefit everyone. Yep, we Nigerians are selfish like that and I don’t know if it’s the environment or the upbringing but something has to change, I mean even when you look back to the period of slavery, we were the same people that were selling our own people, when I was younger I used to think that the slave traders would come with advance weapon and take people away with threat, when I discovered the truth and how the whole thing went I knew there was something fundamentally wrong with us as a people in Africa at large. We are very selfish and always find ways to sabotage our own people.

The country’s situation from investors point of view is looking green, some might find it hard to believe but this government has been able to make Nigeria look very pleasing to foreign investors and I’ve been following some of the news about it, like FTSE reclassifying Nigeria and Nigeria regaining frontier market status, the stock market is doing really well and companies both local and foreign are looking to list on it, from a capitalist perspective the country’s economy is good and things look great for investment but the poor and middle class are taking the brunt of it, things are so expensive and people are finding it very hard to survive, I don’t know how they expect the average Nigerian to be happy about all these developments with how hard their daily livelihood is.

This topic should be in the politics and society sub board.

Having numerous natural resources will be of no relevance if the government is bad just like we see in Nigeria today. This is because the bad leaders only channel the funds generated from this natural resources into their private pockets without caring about the citizens welfare. Since the discovery of crude oil in Nigeria around 1956, there has been great shift from the Agriculture - based system of Economy to a more delicate oil based economy which is the problem that we face today.

Good governance is more important than all the natural resources and to get such good leadership in Nigeria, you have to vote for it. Sitting at a place and saying that your vote doesn't count is another way they rig themselves back into the seat easily. If a good government enters, everything becomes prosperous and security becomes basic.

I think we have had enough of this bad governance topics lately. Maybe it would be better if we can stop washing our dirty linen outside, everybody has their shortcomings so let us not make ours so obvious for the world to see.

That being said. Is no longer News that our leaders has been the brain behind the setback in our country. Because if it's natural resources, Nigeria is 100% endowed and God bless us on that aspect.  But our leaders are just the problem we had. I don't need to strain more but all I can say is that, election is just by the corner and if you feel you're tired of what is going on in our country then this is just another opportunity of making Nigeria work again.

Permit me to make this observation: this thread should be on the Naija Politics and Society sub-board.

When we talk about good governance and the abundance of natural resources we have in the country, they are all two different approach and meaning as well, it takes a visionary government to be able to make effective use of the natural resources, we can have enough enrichment in our resources and yet lack the competent leaders that will explore on the advanced discovery of how they could utilize on this opportunity nature has given, this is why to have a balance in all, we need to have the government that could deliver up to expectation and have the full capacity of being a leader and not a ruler, every other thing will definitely be in place over time.

Presently in Nigeria, there is high rate of insecurity, inflation, and economic hardship, and all is caused by bad rulership. No investor would like to esterblish where their is high level of insecurity even with our numerous natural resources.
Do you not know that in some cases, investors create insecurity as a means of distracting people while they collaborate with the government to steal the peoples natural resources? What we need is a combination of good governance and the availability of natural resource because the absent of one can even frustrate the other.

We already have the natural resource in abundance and it is not even worth it to talk about government and factor out the blessing of the resources that we have. rather, we need to focus more on the need to have an accountable and a responsible leaders that is ready and willing to make the best out of the already enormous natural resource that we have. our major problem have always been a leadership problem.

Even if Nigeria have enough resources to do better than we are right now but having oil and natural resources is not enough of the money generated from them is not used properly. Let’s look at it this way, even if a country does not have much oil, good leadership can still help it to grow by creating enough jobs, supporting business and also making life very easier for the people. This is exactly what I believe we need in Nigeria too. How problem is not just about what we have but how we mange what we have and not until this resources we believe that we have start making a real difference in the lives of ordinary Nigerians, it will definitely be difficult for people to feel the benefits of the country’s wealth.

Lol, wait! you are talking about making obvious what's already obvious? There are several discussion about corruptions in US, for those that really pay attention to different political events going on in various countries, they would definitely get every information they want, so  everything is obvious, however I agree with you that we have had a similar discussion multiple times in our local board, if OP could search for old topics like this, he would find them here.

Everyone have to do their little part (play their role well) to have a good change in a country, that's all I can say in this matter. Some people blame the government but do worse than them politicians if given small position.

When you get corrupt leaders wey dey only think about themselves wetin wan make the natural resources grow and reach the masses. Honestly e con be like say nah only crude oil be the natural resources we get. At the rate wey things dey go very soon we no go get need for voters card because country go don porous to the point say e no go get value or fit determine who go rule again because already them go don get who the candidate go be.
We go continue to dey talk about bad government and all but if we no do something about am, nah so our children go come still meet am.

Nigeria is rich in natural resources, but even though natural resources are in Nigeria, Nigeria does not have its own monopoly or advanced technology, due to which big companies in Europe and America are making billions of dollars in profits from Nigeria's natural resources. Until the backbone is strong, the standard of living of Nigerian citizens will remain low despite having so many natural resources.

You said an important thing that leadership is more important than natural resources, I completely agree with your statement. You look at Singapore, their country does not have such natural resources, but still their country's passport is the strongest passport in the world and this has been possible only because of the right leadership. Even half a century ago, Singapore's situation was very bad, but from that place, due to the right leadership, they have established themselves as the best economic country today.

I always feel bad for Nigeria, I really hope that Nigeria will stand strong on its own and use its abundant natural resources under its own leadership.

What is your take on this?

Nigeria is a blessed country with different kinds of minerals resources which if was put to good use will be beneficial to every living being in this country but greed has made a few set of politicians who think the world revolves around them to control it and don't care whether the people are suffering or not.

The problem of Nigeria is bad leadership and corruption and anyday that corruption lessens then Nigeria will be a better place, those that are elected into governance are not enacting laws that favors the common Man and the economy keeps getting hard which has resulted to the insecurity, kidnapping and rituals we have today because people are looking for means to survive and they results to those aforementioned crimes. If we can have a leader who puts the resources we have into good use and make good policies, everything will fall back to normalcy. Good governance is what fuels growth in the society. As Nigeria is, we have the natural resources but no good governance to fuel it's growths.

We should not continue to say that our votes does not count, and therefore we will not come out to vote. This politicians spend good sum of money campaigning seeking to capture the interest of Nigerians, the make promises, and even give people money to vote for them. If really our votes does not count, they will not be busy doing all these things. It is the masses that can change the leadership of this country by voting in the right person. We are tired of bad governance, and can not fold our arms looking the politicians do their own wish. The interest of the country should come first, and that is what good leaders does. If a leader wants to make policies and decision that will profit the masses, it won't take him a whole tenure to do . The president Bola Ahmed Tinubu made a declaration on the first day he assumed the office of the president, and immidiately fuel price changed from that moment, why would it take him a whole tenure to make Nigeria economy stable?

A country that has a good government is blessed already even if they don't have natural resources that can aid the growth of the country. There are countries that depends only on agriculture but they are making it big because they have a working government that puts the interest of the citizens first. I don't know if i will say that our leaders are just misbehaving because we are blessed with natural resources. If we are to be one of these underdeveloped countries that doesn't have natural resources, maybe our leaders would have seen the need for a good governance and accountability. It is sad that irrespective of our Godgiven natural resources we are still far behind in technology and development all because of selfish leaders. A country where many individuals are richer than the country itself, yet their wealth is not felt at all, isn't that wonderful?

If you look at Nigeria closely, we deserve our leaders. We are a people that appreciate criminals. Someone stole pepper of #100. He is burnt alive, another stole billions and he is welcomed home with open arms. You can see where I am going to. If by luck and chance a good leader enters, they will so frustrate him that he might even resign and not come back for another tenor, and even if he comes back for that tenor, he won't win.
And there goes the people all silent about it. No urgency to make good of that leader. When we are ready, the world and ourselves will know that we are ready.

Bad government has been there since onset and we were born into it. This is because it's the same set of people that are still in power since then, they're only rotating it amongst their families. The youths have failed in their own part to allow our parents to decieve us that we are not one and allow tribalism to take over our mentality. This has really divided us from generation to generation even though, we smile at each other and say we are one. People are voting for tribe and party not for a good leader.

We have failed to see reason to how there's a 'cabal' of godfathers who are ruling behind the scenes. They might or might not be leaders we know, but the control and dictate what works and what does not.
Besides bad governance, the market today is flooded with imports of foreign goods that makes us high spenders overseas and when we come home, we shove aside our own home produce that should be export worthy and hone worthy to be used and that's how corruption both from the small to the big creeks in because everyone wants the best and will do anything to get it because they believe foreign made products are better off than our home produce which meet same quality.

Complaining about bad governance is not enough if we are not willing to take the necessary steps to change things through our votes. However, we also need to understand that having a voter’s card is one thing, while making the right choice and protecting our votes is another. Nigeria has enough natural and human resources to improve the lives of its citizens, but corruption, mismanagement, and a lack of accountability have continued to hold us back. No government can solve every problem overnight, but a responsible government should be able to make meaningful progress with the resources available. The question is, are Nigerians ready to put aside tribalism, religious sentiments, and personal interests to elect leaders based on competence, integrity, and accountability?

Many fails to understand the important pf good governance but focus all attention to the important of mineral resources in the country, some of the world richest countries today lacks mineral resources but has good governance which is why most of there efforts do dome to reality.
In the world today,  Singapore appears among the richest nations in the world today but they lack mineral resources the same way nations like Nigeria has but don't know how to use them. The only advantage Singapore has is good governance and if this persists they may become better than most nations.

You are very correct, the government and leadership is just rotating around their circle, it doesn't go beyond that. I have seen a Senator that has been in office for 4 tenure which is about 16 years, when he was about leaving he presented his own brother as the next candidate. A lot of things are going wrong in this country but had it been we have good leaders, it wouldn't have gotten to this worst situation we are now. The area where you said people are voting for tribe, that's another key area that is affecting the growth of the country. If we can remove tribalism, we have solved half of the problem of Nigeria.
