It is a welcome development if banks in South Korea have started accepting Bitcoin as collateral, which means the Korean government have adopted the use of Bitcoin in their own country, and not only that , there is also a very strong confidence in the mind of investors within the country. Bitcoin is gaining adoption, and acceptance very fast, and the banking sector have seen the need to take Bitcoin as collateral because Bitcoin is an asset of value that grows with time, and your Bitcoin remains there own you can't pay back your loan.
Apart from South Korea, some other countries have also seen the need why they should embrace the use of Bitcoin since it serves an hedge against inflation. In the past, my own country disassociated all banks from Bitcoin transactions, but today they have also allowed the use of Bitcoin.

Great news, what came to my mind first is , what happens if a firm borrows against its BTC and the price drops eventually? I fear they may lose the coin.

It depends on the Loan-to-value ratio and its threshold set by the bank or institution offering the loan service. If their margin call and liquidation threshold is ~ 75%-80%, and the value of BTC drops, pushing your LTV ratio to within that threshold, then you'd either have to make another deposit, or they would liquidate your coins to cover the debt.

I would be very cautious when it comes to news regarding Bitcoin and banks. Accepting BTC as a collateral for loans is good news for the bank and bad news for anyone, who decides to use his BTC as a collateral. The price volatility of Bitcoin means one thing. The bank would require a bigger collateral to cover the risk of sudden price drops. Also the borrower has to send his Bitcoins to the bank, which means the borrower has little to no control over his Bitcoins, after he gets the loan. The bank might come up with an excuse(other than Bitcoin price decrease) to liquidate the loan and take the Bitcoin collateral. We should "be our own bank" and stay away from traditional banks as far away as possible(which is really hard).

You've got a point. But there are still people who will fall on this trap especially if they need the funds badly and they don't feel like selling their bitcoin for good.

For them, it may seem a good opportunity, because having it as a collateral does only mean they won't be losing their bitcoin forever, but if they interpret the condition well, bitcoin as a collateral means giving the full custody to the bank or the other party around. Its still like they sell their bitcoin, the only difference is that, they are still listed as the bitcoin's owner but the full control and possible manipulation is already on the bank.

As long as it shows another accomplishment for bitcoin, then definitely it can be considered a good step for bitcoin adoption.

However, bitcoin itself brings risk, so expect that in every task or achievement associated with bitcoin, you have to make careful decisions so you won't end up regretting later.

Bitcoin as a collateral may create a bigger problem if you are not well aware of the terms and conditions agreed prior to taking a loan. But if you know it well and have prepared for it already, hence I don't think that will still lead to compromise yourself and your bitcoin.

When you are in business, businessmen take every opportunity they see when there is demand. Since the crypto industry is growing quite fast, they take advantage of the situation.
Yes, bitcoin has already become a mainstream as an investment asset and banks are obviously seeing this. Therefore, you can't expect that they won't be taking advantage of the current demand, of course banks are greedy, they will definitely take part in the current achievement of bitcoin.

The only problem here is that, they are not actually helpful in the long run. They can turn our bitcoin portfolio empty if we keep falling on their trap, while leaving the bank owning a lot of bitcoin that we once take full custody of.

Personally, I won't bite this kind of offer. But we all have different stance when it comes to our own individual bitcoin.

I am so sorry to sound very harsh about this but I have always known banks to be an evil organisation who wants to control people's lives at all cost, they know you are nothing without your money in the bank account.

They have power over everyone since they have your money, and damn I hate this to core so now imagine giving up my Bitcoin as collateral to the banks of all things or entities in the world, the banks?

That's like surrendering my both hands for shackles to be received, I don't know about anyone else but this is the slavery 2.0 in disguise, your Bitcoin should be your freedom, banks have no right to come close to your Bitcoin.

For me, the real question is whether Bitcoin-backed lending can grow sustainably without encouraging excessive leverage.

Do you think this is a good step for Bitcoin adoption, or could it create bigger problems during the next major market downturn?

My country even until now still prohibits banks from providing services related to digital commodities such as Bitcoin. We need to understand how banks set conditions for borrowers through Bitcoin collateral. Whether the ideal requirement is collateral based on market value or having a fixed value at the time of pledging. The regulations must be clear and easy to understand. Certainly, if the bank provides ease of access, it would become a new innovation that helps the development of the Bitcoin industry and the economy. But if it makes things difficult, usually borrowers will not be interested. One thing I have learned about bank regulations is that all rules that seem easy for borrowers, if examined closely together, in business terms, banks will never allow themselves to incur losses; they will seek to maximize profit.

The fact that Swiss banks are accepting Bitcoin as collateral means that Bitcoin's popularity is growing, and we can easily understand how much its adoption has increased. If banks around the world lend using Bitcoin as collateral, its usefulness for other uses will increase and its price will also increase. The more Bitcoin becomes accessible to the public, the more Bitcoin's popularity will increase, and the more Bitcoin will be adopted.
However, one important thing is that now that someone accepts Bitcoin as collateral, they may not take out loans as often. Because Bitcoin will become so valuable that no one will want to deposit it as collateral and take fiat.

However, one important thing is that now that someone accepts Bitcoin as collateral, they may not take out loans as often. Because Bitcoin will become so valuable that no one will want to deposit it as collateral and take fiat.

People with urgent needs will do it, and I think the loan term can also be adjusted for a short period, not for the long term. So from the borrower's side, there may not be too much doubt regarding price fluctuations. Anyway, the bank will still calculate the price risk for the funds being lent.
With this, Bitcoin really appears to function as an investment asset like property.

Bitcoin adoption isn't just about buying and holding anymore. Some financial institutions are exploring ways to let businesses borrow against their BTC instead of selling it.

South Korea's Jeonbuk Bank reportedly launched a Bitcoin-backed corporate lending program on October 12, allowing eligible businesses to use BTC as collateral for loans in Korean won.

MARA Holdings has also used its Bitcoin holdings to secure $600 million in financing, showing how BTC can serve as collateral beyond the crypto lending market.

Sources:

https://cryptorank.io/news/feed/a5bbd-south-koreas-jeonbuk-bank-launches-first-bitcoin-backed-corporate-loans

https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/08/11/bitcoin-backed-lending-is-entering-its-institutional-era-two-prime

I think this is a positive development because companies can access capital without immediately selling their BTC. It gives Bitcoin another practical use in finance beyond simply holding it as an investment.

However, borrowing against a volatile asset comes with risks. If BTC's price drops sharply, borrowers may need to add collateral or face liquidation. Interest costs also mean this strategy won't make sense for everyone.

For me, the real question is whether Bitcoin-backed lending can grow sustainably without encouraging excessive leverage.

Do you think this is a good step for Bitcoin adoption, or could it create bigger problems during the next major market downturn?

On legal sense this situation is really a good thing on Bitcoin, because with that acceptance they made. It make Bitcoin became more stronger on legal side, since this is been accepted by banks as good alternative collateral to use by people.

But actually I won't let any banking institution handles my BTC. since Bitcoin is good if we have full control of our funds.

This is indeed a good step, then I want to se more adoption like this. Because it will make Bitcoin became more famous.

I am so sorry to sound very harsh about this but I have always known banks to be an evil organisation who wants to control people's lives at all cost, they know you are nothing without your money in the bank account.
Bank is a financial institution, everything they do is focused on money, and for banks to continue operating, they must make profits, as long as it doesn't get to stealing from customers, anything legal is justified, and nobody should have an issue with them.

If you don't have a pressing problem, you won't run to the bank for loan, just so people do not default, banks must bargain for collateral, i don't see it as wrong if banks now accept Bitcoin as collateral, they only agree to take it as collateral because it was offered, because they can't on their own know whether the borrower have a portfolio in Bitcoin.

When they don't know which other means to use and take custody of your holdings, they provide an option that will make you bring it to them.

For individuals, I don't consider Bitcoin collateral loans as something that you should consider, rather than sell your bitcoin, solve your issue and restock when necessary.

For companies, it's something that could be considered, after all, it's investors' money, and they can always strike a favorable deal with the bank more than what will be offered to individuals.
Based on the news reports about this, I see it as a positive step, and I don’t think this is just another way to seize control of the Bitcoin held by people who have pledged it as collateral for loans.
There has already been a growing number of people who welcome this positively because they believe that, rather than being forced to sell their Bitcoin, its value will likely increase in the future. With this concept in place, they can get their Bitcoin back and pay off everything they’ve borrowed from the bank.
I think this positive perspective isn’t just beneficial for the company—it’s also good for individuals.

If only the banks won't mess up later, doing this means the banks knows your worth, you have an address and identity revealed, someone very bad can be working in the bank and sending your data out of the bank.

One was exposed here, When you use a big property to take loan the prayer of banks is may you never be able to pay up so they can take over the property, and now Bitcoin?

It's a good news for people who want and likes the centralised advantages like this, but for people who prioritise their privacy it's definitely a no go road, we are only thinking about the positive side, what about the negative side?

Based on the news reports about this, I see it as a positive step, and I don’t think this is just another way to seize control of the Bitcoin held by people who have pledged it as collateral for loans.
And who controls the media? who owns the media, so they can make whatever news they want to convince you that its a positive move.
Whoever the media owner is and whoever controls the media, as readers, we know how to filter information so we don’t immediately believe what is reported.
However, regarding the link provided above, I think it’s fine—there’s no need to assume the worst about the parties in question by suggesting that they’re trying to find a way to take control of people’s ownership rights over this loan information.
Those who are ready to sell Bitcoin without needing a bank loan—as suggested in this information—are welcome to do so.
In my situation, for example, I might take out a loan rather than sell my Bitcoin.

Well, bro, this can't be the real adoption of Bitcoin because they just gave people a way to hand their coins over to them and then not own them because now they own your coins unless you pay the interest on time. Adoption is when banks believe in it. I can be wrong, yep, but they don't believe in it. They are just after customers' money haha.

I think what it means is that some banks realise that Bitcoin is actually slowly becoming more
and more popular and that the general trend is to HODL among Bitcoiners.

Their thinking is if Bitcoiners wont spend their Bitcoin maybe they would spend FIAT, pay interest
and 'still own' their Bitcoin at the end of the loan term.

At this stage of my life being more financially educated my thinking is if I cannot afford to buy it
I cant have it and I am not willing to take out a loan to have it.

The only way banks in general can exist is by issuing loans and they will come up with all sorts of
"products" in order to relieve us of our money. In some examples they will even start regional and
global conflicts and wars in order to grow their profits (as is happening today!)

If it's for the sake of needing, I guess anyone who's got it and when a bank is also offering the same loan on their area, they'll desperate collateralize their bitcoin for it.

But if you don't actually need, there's no need to use it. The banks are recognizing how valuable bitcoin is just like the other assets that they accept as collateral.

Well, if it's for the experience. I might try it in the future I don't know exactly when but it won't be a lot of money or more than $100 if they allow.

This sounds very good, it's better to struggle to get your Bitcoin back by paying your loans back instead of selling your Bitcoin, it makes a lot of sense but it's the Bank, I wasn't happy with the banks and it's the reason I found Bitcoin, I was mistreated and punished for using the banks and I snapped, withdrew all my money and went back home with Fiat, later I started figuring out what Bitcoin is all about and I deposited the money back into another bank then use a P2P platform to convert my fiat into Bitcoin, since that time I have never looked back, banks will always be banks, don't get too carried way by this news, how a bank will treat you will be different from how other country's bank will.

Overall, it contributes to the mainstreaming of Bitcoin.

In our society, banks hold so much power and, therefore, influence. When they say Bitcoin has value, it must have value. So, in a way, banks accepting Bitcoin is like a testimony that Bitcoin is already acceptable. While many of us don't really care, this may be a go-ahead signal to the rest.

Bitcoin-backed lending is sustainable on the part of the banks. Their profit is locked no matter which direction Bitcoin's price goes. It may be a different story though on the part of the borrower. It's risky. If you don't have some extra set aside just in case the price tanks, you might have to bid a sad goodbye to your coins.

Yeah and I agree, this is a sign that the banks do see that bitcoin is now an acceptable asset that they can also profit with if someone only has bitcoin to collateral.

We might not choose this as an option if we ever in need of money as this gives up the whole custody of what we own to them.

But that's not the whole point of it, the main point is about them having the same service with bitcoin holders which they have probably laughed and denied several years ago.
