Here’s an article from a few weeks ago discussing it in a bit more detail. While they may not be successful, it is definitely something that has legs. The Canadians that aren’t dependent on government to survive are beginning to grow resentful of those who are after a free ride in life. A positive development for Canada.

https://www.reuters.com/world/alberta-separatists-step-up-efforts-leave-canada-after-meeting-with-trump-2026-02-12/

Alberta voted last night, and it was an overwhelming majority (75%) to shut this seppie talk down - we do not want to be involved in US corruption.  Daniel Smith has destroyed her political career.  Even though she is against separation, she is the one who opened the entire can of worms.  Sad

If Trump tried to annex Canada, he should have done so in his first term.   One last, desperate attempt before the whole pile of states collapsed.

I haven't heard this from a relative of mine from Alberta.

Because it's not true - OgNasty is a habitual liar after all.

I thought it wasn't true?  You called me a liar.  Care to apologize?

Trump wants to make America great again, and one of the ways he's reckoned doing it is treating Canada like another Mexico. Let's see if it succeeeds. We'd practically witness history in the making. MAGA. I guess he'd go for Alberta if all of Canada can't be grabbed.

Brazil refused to join today as well.

Brazilians hate Trump, and now view America much more negatively thanks to Trump.

In that context, Trump had the brilliant idea of publicly endorsing a candidate in Brazil he personally liked. As anybody who is not a moron would have predicted, that backfired, and the other guy won even though Trump's candidate was leading the polls before Trump endorsed him.

This is common sense: countries get pissed off if some other country--especially the USA--tries to meddle in their election and their collective response is usually, "fuck you!", and they vote for whomever the USA would like the least. This is a natural human instinct and the US would do the same if (say) the president of China endorsed a candidate here.

And then there's the fact that Trump went through this exact same scenario in Canada, whereby his endorsement flipped the polls to the other guy.

It shows you the degree of mental decay among the administration when they can't grasp that voters in other countries might be nationalists too, just like themselves.

The main issue is that Albert future is going to be decided by their people not by the political leaders who are trying to use the separation as bargaining tool. Where as 75% support against separation automatically means that everyone is agreed on the reason behind it. Will have different concern regarding the economy, relationship with a Federal government and national unity. Danielle Smith has contributed to make the debate a bigger version . But the responsibility lies with the politicians who are giving the idea more attention. Where as Trump annexing Canada is not as simple as making an offer. They have their own identity, government and democratic institutions and economy and their people have the right to decide their own future

A happening before B does not imply causation. Trump endorsement may not have mattered.

This is not a black/white thing. Obviously Trump didn't create all of Lula's votes, but it's quite plausible his endorsement moved a few percentage points of voters to Lula. National pride is a very strong force, and Trump is in the news 24/7 even in other countries. And you can bet that Lula's party was amplifying Trump's intervention.
