In a way banning celebrities or sports pro athletes from advertising gambling seems wrong as they are they ones who push interest to gambling when gambling are one of main sponsors of what they do. In some way that is like preventing employee to promote who pays you salary.

Other thing that caught my attention is Australia again. This is like 3 or 4 big announcement from them this year about fighting gambling addiction. Either problem with gambling in Australia is really that bad, or their government really wants to fix that issue. Or it is me that for some reason only notice and remember Austria and gambling articles.

I think australia is trying to prevent children from getting addicted to gambling.  These celebrities are role models to young people and also people favourite celebrity and they can easily influence their fans when they are used for promoting gambling. If the government wants to do this it is not bad and they have a good reason.

The government cant completely ban gambling because even if they try to do some gamblers will still look for a means to gamble. It will be better for them to regulate it in a way that it wont have much influence on young people.

It's obviously it will hit the gambling community big in Australia, could be hundreds in lost revenues for gambling sites as we all know that one effective method of putting your online website is thru celebrities. Of course, you can't question if it is rationale or not, it's their government that are going to enforced it.

That's one thing about Australia though, they are one of the biggest countries in terms of sports betting and gambling in general. But at least their government is doing something to prevent their society decaying because of gambling.

It must be admitted that Albanese government has managed to achieve its goal without any untoward consequence, much like heads I win, tails you lose Tongue
They have tried to adopt something like middle path!
As a result, media outlet and sport broadcasters are left in a state of dismay.

You know, largest source of revenue for broadcasters and TV channel was gambling advertisement and sponsorship during live match coverage.
If stadium banner and multi million dollar celebrity deal were to cease then sports league such as AFL and NRL would face significant revenue shortfall.

Australia will ban licensed bookmakers from using celebrities in advertising starting in January 2027.
I consider it good because there is the possibility for people who look to these celebrities as mentors to be influenced into gambling just because their mentors who are celebrities are promoters of a casino. If casinos are interested in running marketing using individuals, they can use people who do marketing and advertising as business and can get people to use the casino because of a good marketing campaign not because of the celebrity influence that they have.

Quote
Advertising during live sports broadcasts in stadiums will also be banned.
There are many people of different ages who during a live sport broadcast can be exposed to these sort of advertising and influenced to start gambling. This ban will help reduce the chances of underage or unqualified individuals gambling because of influence.

I think if celebrity and live sport advertisement are temporarily halted then cost for bookmaker to acquire new customer will increase significantly.
However, I have read the news and as I understand it, any complete ban has not been imposed!

My notion is they will indeed be able to reach logged in users on digital platform at specific frequency throughout the day. So, I don’t expect this will be any major financial disaster for any big bookmaker.

However, it is the smaller competitors those who sought to gain prominence through high impact advertisement on live television, that will suffer most, imo. At the end of the day, major casinos further solidified their market share!

It would be good to have a regulation, but this not means would be something really helpfull.
In Italy they have banned also advertising for bookmakers/gambling platforms but they have just changed the target of their business... promoting "news sports channels" with the name of gambling website Grin !

At least here has been something that was pretty fine for awhile - limiting scam promotion in prime time - main italian tv.

Actually they have similar restrictions also for online presence. Anyway there are many ways to "hide" the promotional content in a "video" or other websites...

Trying to minimize the level of gambling addiction in Australia by their government is a good one and very commendable but banning her casinos from using celebrities for their advertisements is very wrong, we all know that gambling gets more validations and commendations from adverts and that's where the bookmarkers gets gamblers and in a way lure them to use their platforms because once a celebrity does an advert of him winning a substantial amount from the casinos people will troop into the platform and begin to gamble because of the celebrity's influence so this doesn't seat down well.

Obviously with this ban it will be disastrous on Australia and they will lose a lot of revenue from gambling sites because gambling broadcast has a lot of revenues  and sponsorship during sports coverages so it's not going to be easy. The loose will be very much and since it's the government that will enforce it, I doubt if there will be any escape route.

for me, i think the Australian government has a valid point in prohibiting those celebrities from promoting gambling... since there are many young individuals who look up to celebrities and can easily be swayed by what they endorse. If they see that the celebrities they idolize are promoting gambling, then it could influence them into thinking that betting is normal or fun. It also shows that the government is making a reasonable effort to guide those young individuals from any harm associated with gambling. Of course, celebrities also need to take responsibility for the product that they are endorsing, particularly since they have young followers.

I think this is the right decision because fans often tend to imitate their idols. They might even start gambling at a casino if their favorite celebrity promotes it. I remember there were several high profile cases in the US, including one involving Shaquille O’Neal, who promoted gambling and was later pursued over it following a court ruling. Obviously these endorsements bring in extra money for celebrities, but I think they already earn more than enough and could easily do without promoting casinos.

There is nothing lenient about this approach because this a major crackdown both on the influencers and even the gambling platforms because the reach of some of these gambling platforms and the major reason why they grow so fast is because they are able to make use of influencers to get to a larger audience and that they through the live broadcast also shares their ads that gets people attention.

i guess the next thing will be to target club sponsorship because that is still a major means through which most of the platforms gains global visibility.

How would you assess the economic losses from these bans, as well as their rationale?

This is going to be a disadvantage to the celebrities because they earn from the promotion that they do for these bookies and from their income they pay taxes, so when the taxable income of these celebrities is low, they also pay less income tax. Also, the bookies might really get affected if those advertising channels are the primary source of their traffic, more traffic more revenue, the government earns too through taxes and citizens gets jobs in those bookies and pay tax as well but if the revenue of the bookies drops due to challenges like this, some of them could reduce workers and some could even close down.

I just think there should be a control on how the ads should be done instead of totally banning it. There's one thread that talked about some influencers being charged I think for making deceptive ads for casino, that would have just been what the government should have done in this case, warn celebrities to not make deceptive videos instead of banning them from advertising bookies.

In a way banning celebrities or sports pro athletes from advertising gambling seems wrong as they are they ones who push interest to gambling when gambling are one of main sponsors of what they do. In some way that is like preventing employee to promote who pays you salary.
Because celebrities are the ones promoting gambling ads that can have a big impact on their communities, the Australian government is taking a firm stance by banning these artists, at least according to them this will reduce the number of gambling.

The government may see it does not want to generate taxes from gambling, it does not want citizens to become addicted hence its making the rules stricter, although somewhat lenient because the bookies can still promote without celebrities.

This wouldn't stop gamblers from gambling but will help limit the rate at which the young ones and non gamblers are rushing into gambling but a bad news for celebrities, because one of their side hustle has been shutdown. This is going to affect the gambling business in Australia but I believe that during the passage of time these bookmakers will find a better way to promote gambling in the country. The rate of gambling addiction is becoming alarming.

Australia will ban licensed bookmakers from using celebrities in advertising starting in January 2027. Advertising during live sports broadcasts in stadiums will also be banned.
Bookmaker commercials will not be banned from airing on television during the day, but there will be restrictions on their frequency.
https://mifinitybetting.com/articles/mifinity-gambling-ad-reform-2027/
https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-15700079/albanese-gambling-ads-australia-banned.html
https://brandequity.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/digital/australia-pm-albanese-announces-crackdown-on-gambling-advertising/130015977
Media reports claim the government considered a complete ban on gambling, but opted for a more lenient approach within the framework of responsible gambling. The ban applies to all major sports, from football to rugby and Australian football. How would you assess the economic losses from these bans, as well as their rationale?

I think this is the right decision because fans often tend to imitate their idols. They might even start gambling at a casino if their favorite celebrity promotes it. I remember there were several high profile cases in the US, including one involving Shaquille O’Neal, who promoted gambling and was later pursued over it following a court ruling. Obviously these endorsements bring in extra money for celebrities, but I think they already earn more than enough and could easily do without promoting casinos.
I agree with you. I have always been against celebrities and some influencers promoting an activity like gambling that is very addictive. The issues with most celebrities is that they will make an offer look so good even when they themselves are not using it. Alot of people look up to them and will definitely try out gambling since it is coming from a public figure whom they love and trust so much.

The ban on celebrities promoting gambling is really a harsh decision that will greatly affect both the celebrities and every other parties that benefit from such promotions, that is why I think that a more lenient restriction should have been adopted. Like a law that prohibits celebrities from promoting scam gambling sites, misleading their fans with so-good-to be-true and unverified kind of promotion, and exaggerating about wins just to lure people to use a certain platform. The law can still maintain promotions at specific hours so underaged children will not have to be exposed to such ads.

These celebrities and influencers just need to be checked.

Economic losses? Before you even mention losses, what value has gambling brought to the economy? Does it boost production, has it help increase the income of households? So what economic value has it brought before we jump into the losses. I'll leave you to answer that.

Statistics shows gambling is more among teenagers and young adults than even matured adults. We all know that gambling has disfunctionalised homes.

And advertisement has a way of making people do it buy into what is being advertised. Their concern is the amount of  people who are willingly gambling without looking at the damage it has on them. Not to bash any casinos, because what they are doing is not illegal. Just that humans find it hard to actually control themselves.

It's understandable, they are operating a gambling business. and the government just doesn't want to make it look like they are selling opportunities, so they have to control the ads but that's alright I'm sure they will find a way to still continue with their marketing. In fact, it's not necessary for bookies to get a celebrity to market for them as people don't really look at that, as long as they have a good reputation and pay on time people will still use them. Limit the ads, minimize addiction that's a good move imo.

I see ads in UGC format more often than gambling ads involving celebrities. For example, during the riots in Paris, when people were trying to raid a gaming store, there was a guy standing in front, holding his phone and playing games on Shuffle Casino. It's too much for me. The casino can't be sued because of that "ad" video because it's UGC.

For me, as long as soft selling ads in UGC format are allowed, then restrictions on using celebrities in gambling advertising won't have a big impact on society if the goal is to support responsible gambling. Sports and gambling have a close relationship. You can't ban gambling, you can only ban the bookmakers. One bookmaker gets banned, two others will pop up, and so on.

Sports and gambling have a close relationship.
Sports betting is popular in this country, next to horse racing I guess.

You can't ban gambling, you can only ban the bookmakers. One bookmaker gets banned, two others will pop up, and so on.
If they want to ban it they can. However, it will not solve the problem as gamblers will just find a way to bypass that ban.
For bookmakers if they violate that law, then they will lose their license, and yes new ones may come out but if they do the same then they will also lose their license.

It's a law that needs to be followed by those who have a license in this jurisdiction.
