I didn't expect this, Philippines is only 11.5% here? For me it feels way more than that, online gambling is everywhere here now and I already saw some lives and families got wrecked because of it. I'm curious also, is it like when a country is poorer, some people see gambling as their key to make money? I once heard someone struggling with finances say gambling is the only way out he can see.

I agreed with so many users in the Philippines addicted tk gambling that number didnt do any justice this should be at least over 20% in my opinion. From rich to poor users in our country we can see how many are into casino and online games that has gambling. But it also quite surprising that South Africa is quite active on gambling.

Should not countries with larger population be at least on top of this list? Norway population is 5.5 millions only. US population is 342 millions. US gambling 2023 statistics say that half of population participated in any form of gambling during a year. I dont think that within 3 years numbers have changed that much. With growth of popularity of gambling they became even greater. However Norway somehow managed to surpass US by number of users who gamble?

I showed someone this data when I first saw it in this thread and the person I showed it to told me that this data also shows how losed some government are in regulating the gambling behavior of citizens in their country and so underage gambling is also what makes them top on the list, just like South African which is a the top of the list, rumour has it that their government only cares more about the revenue they are getting from the gambling industry.

Why I am not surprised about South Korea being at the bottom is because I have always seen some article that says that the country has some of the strictest gambling laws in the world, especially for its own citizens, this data just shows that it's true.

As for USA position on this list, I am also surprised, I expectd to see them almost at the top of the list. I am actually curious to know which criteria was used to carry out this survey, could it be they ranked it based on the country they found more minor (aged 16+) that are using online gambling sites?

I think Nigeria should be way above where they are in the ranking based on the percentage of Nigerians that are into gambling, if you independently check the statistics of the online casinos you will notice that a very high percentage of Nigeria's population are online casino users. Could be it is as a result of the economy, this may be a factor that is luring many into gambling.


Then I saw that south Korea are below the rankings, well am not surprised seeing that they are there below, they have a somewhat stable economy and the people do not give the impression of gambling interests that much, and for that, except for fun or adventure unlike some poor countries where people use gambling as a means of earning a living dew to economic hardship.

Let us not assume that just because they are at the top means their addiction problem is worse.
And based on what I read from that survey, it only covers the last month, so it's not really a survey conducted over several months.

This one tells the real story, I have seen many reports before about Australia being number 1 in terms of gambling addiction.

I expected it to be a lot higher ^{[Philippines]}, but given that these stats were taken from a specific survey and a lot of things can impact how accurately it represents a country ^{[e.g., randomness in picking participants, sample size, etc.]}, I take it with a grain of salt.

How are we certain about these numbers? You have to realise that gambling is illegal in many of these countries, and that means most of them end up using a VPN, and that is why the country origins could look different from what they really are. I am not sure if I would say that this would be real and actual; we could have a lot different. But aside from that, it is still quite unrealistic to assume that 1 out of every 3 people gambles in ANY country; that makes no sense to me at all.

I do not mean just the legal way; you could make it as legal as possible, and you could have a million legal gambling apps and casinos and websites, etc., and it would still not make sense to me that 1 out of 3 people would be gambling in any nation.

Nevertheless, many players are aware of this, yet when it comes to their own gambling, they become overly confident blindly believing that they are somehow special and that, no matter what, they will eventually win their money back. Wow, I am surprised to see the Philippines down there which means there's lesser gamblers in the country. But I honestly doubt that. Maybe the stats are not that accurate at all. When you are on the streets, you will sometimes see and hear people gambling on their smartphones. Heck, even inside the school, when the parents are picking up their children, I saw a mother playing Sugar Rush by Pragmatic Play.

Also, the advertisements of the popular gambling sites here kept on growing. They are licensed and regulated, so that's not a problem for our government, but they don't know that maybe their countrymen are addicted to gambling because they do not have statistics about it.

No, I don't think so, a country could have high population with gambling citizens that focus more in gambling on their local casino in the country, while another country with low population could have more citizens that focus in several online casino instead of using their local/ traditional casinos and so in this survey is only showing the country that used online casino more, not country that gambles more or have the largest number of gamblers that uses both online and offline casinos.

If this survey covered all types of gambling, including offline gambling, online gambling, and crypto casinos, the results would be different from what we are seeing here, especially in terms of which country has the most gamblers.

You see majority of people don’t gamble simply because they misjudge the odds. The main reason they gamble is because the alternative feels just as hopeless. Let’s take for instance, someone who’s salary isn’t enough to help them achieve their goals, a bet with a much higher chance of changing their everything can actual appear to be a more appealing alternative than embarking on a savings plan or quest that’s already guaranteed to get him nowhere.

As far as I know, even though these countries are neighbor but their gambling model are completely different. Disposable income of Norwegian are very high. And high speed internet coverage is close to 100%. As a result people play a lot of online game.

And as for Sweden, I've heard that they have extremely strict spending limit. Once Swedish gambler register with Spelpaus, they are immediately blocked from all licensed casino. I suspect that, due to such stringent rule, significant portion of activity there may have shifted to offshore casino. This is why maybe many fallen outside the scope of this survey tracking.

I don't know how these statistics were calculated because there are only about 8.8 million active gamblers in my country, even though my country totally bans gambling, and that number exceeds the total population of Norway. So I think there's something wrong with these statistics or they weren't explained in detail about what exactly this statistic is. But if we refer to the statistics, it's just hard to trust the ranking of these countries.

I am surprised because I expected my country to be either top one or two, but it turns out that the percentage is in the lower side, if this statistics is correct then I never believed that this top countries where into gambling that much, and the countries i expected as the one with good numbers of gamblers are down below, funny how this is and yet in my country we have good numbers of gamble addiction, I know lot of gamblers in my place that can not do without gambling for a week, even if they do not have the funds they either borrow or see properties to get money for gambling, we have lot of this kind in my place adding to the economic situation, I believed we have the highest numbers until now, wow.

That statistics might not be correct with the way I am seeing it because countries with smaller population are the ones that are topping the chart when it's not supposed to be so. Big countries that have high population like the United States, India, China, Nigeria and others are the ones that are supposed to top the chart which I why I think the statistics is not correct and we don't even know how this data was generated and how authentic it may be. There are more casinos in the United States than any of the countries that are topping the chart.

Whole of South East Asia I think can defeat many countries but if you count Indonesia and Philippines alone, even not counting those abroad,,, they will probably amount to several smaller countries.

South Africa I am not surprised though,,, almost every sport I watch has an ad on licensed South African casinos with the currency depicted in their currency. That is what you get with legalization I guess.

Argentina!!! 12.5% definitely feels low when you see how common sports betting has become among younger crowds. Most of these statistical studies poll legal adults, meaning under 16 activity don't even get counted. If the survey actually captured teenagers, that figure would look a lot higher than 12.5%.

I think Norway ranking so high comes down to high disposable income. Sweden implemented very strict local licensing and mandatory self exclusion controls a few years back, which reduced marketing and total players compared to their neighbors.

I'd say there are two kinds of countries at the top of the list: the ones where life is really good and the ones where life is really bad. In one, people don't know what to do with their time or money. In the other, they dream of winning the jackpot and fixing all their problems that way.

Not sure, of course - just an idea. My country's at the bottom of the list. We live well enough, but we have to work hard for it. Lots of my mates know about gambling, they play now and then, but most of them are bettors - only two or three are into casino games. And bettors mostly bet on big events.

USA has stricter regulation and restriction so not all site can actually provide service to the US customers. Yeah there are sweepstake casino to bypass the regulations but its US we are talking about, they can easily find a physical casino on their country compared to country like South Africa so the percentage are on the lower side for online casino

Aside from that according to Worldometers, South Africa has 65.4 million of people while USA has 349 million so in terms of actual number of people, USA is still ahead of South Africa

Obviously the number gonna dwindle down because number of people that have access to internet on South Africa compared to US are different as well
