Institutions have back up funds in fait to use for what ever is needs in servicing the company running, whereas an individual might not have enough emergency funds and some people does not even keep emergency fund, therefore, if some needs shake them, they will easily sell some or all of their coins. Some individuals might not also plan for a very long term holding while the institution have bigger plans of holding for a longer term and they are very much likely not to sell until they reach their limit.

I recently came across a post on X that was made on the 18th of October 2026 and which by now the price of bitcoin has even moved lower.
The writer asked a question of “who blinks first, the seller or the treasuries”?
In essence, his asking that between the institutions and individuals, whose attitude towards the market will change first since there’s no significant price increase of bitcoin despite how the rate of buyers has surpassed miner supply, if companies will stop buying and start selling or if individuals will stop selling and start buying again?
Personally I will say, the rate at which companies have adopted bitcoin clearly shows that they are looking towards long term because, despite the price fluctuation, they are still buying and they might likely not sell any time soon but individual adopters/investors are even more likely to sell off their bitcoin if the market becomes unfavorable to them.

https://x.com/CryptoBigMartin/status/2111676691374620790

I've had my reservation on this topic because the institutions buying up the BTC supply doesn't pump the price but should they need to create liquidity for dividend payments or other reasons, the price will fall when they sell off fractions of their holdings.

How does that work?

Institutions obviously are having a longer holding capacity but I don't think it automatically classify them as stronger buyers.

Remember that some of these institutional holdings belong to their shareholders, so they they do have financial targets and other obligations to answer to.

If the market goes downtrend, some of them could be under pressure to sell too.

Regardless of the amount of lower amount of holdings individuals have, there are long-term investors among them who have been holding Bitcoin for years and probably won't be moved by every price correction.

So it's not wholly about the amount of BTC institutions and individuals are holding, the financial pressure each holder faces can make the difference.

This post really sheds a light on the important asymmetry the market faces today and from my point of view, a prolonged slump in price dynamics may force retail investors to blink first while corporate treasuries may hold their ground longer because they are governed by long term mandates that make them treat this period as a time to accumulate more by buying from sellers who are liquidating their assets on time perhaps due to impatience.

Not every retail investor may be moved because as you said some have long held their stand even institutional adoption became a thing but my worries is the rate at which hackers seem to be getting into the picture on a frequent basis.

I think that's not a valid comparison considering the number of individual or retail investors compared to institutional investors, because if there are 10,000 institutional investors, then there are millions of retail investors, which makes this comparison invalid because it is pretty obvious that even if 20% of the total retail investors panic and sell, they will still have a larger selling percentage than the institutional investors considering some of them also decide to sell.

Other than that, there is also a very big financial gap between the two categories. An institutional investor can easily afford to keep buying more while holding onto what they had bought earlier if they seem there is an opportunity, whereas most of the retail investors usually have a fixed capital cap, and once they reach that mark, they won't be able to buy anymore, but will be waiting for the right opportunity to sell and take profits so that they can buy again if the market goes down again.

This is why I think this is not actually a valid comparison in logical or technical terms.

Both are quick to blink when the market's attitude changes a lot.
I won't think of it and will be more concerned of what and how much I have instead.
People should worry with what they have and own than to think which one is quick, slow or stable.

.
This is why I think this is not actually a valid comparison in logical or technical terms.
We are in the same boat.
It is not a big thing but if this is only for discussion,  everyone has different ideas to think about it.

The writer asked a question of “who blinks first, the seller or the treasuries”?
We can't deny that institutional adopters will likely hold onto their Bitcoin longer, as they have the financial backing to support it. However, as long as they remain involved in holding Bitcoin, I am sure there will be increasing interest from various parties, including individual holders.

Conversely, if institutional investors sell their Bitcoin, it will create a good opportunity for retail or individual investors to enter at a good price. So, I think it is a fair bet comparing the two, and I still believe the winner will be anyone who is patient, whether retail or institutional. As long as they don't sell immediately at a loss, they should still profit.

Comparing institutional and individual investors might be somewhat unequal. Institutions have more mature plans when they are already involved in a certain type of asset. They have some considerations before making decisions and do not sell impulsively when prices might tend to be bearish. They also have larger fund allocations to accumulate more.

Meanwhile, individual investors usually have limited funds and are more likely to sell when the market tends to move in an unfavorable direction for them. But even so, with the number of institutions involved, there is also a negative impact as the market might become more centralized around the big players, and that’s not exactly good news.
