This is not something new; people take courses and eventually land jobs very different from the ones they took up. The most important thing is you love what you're doing. You know two industries, so in case you didn't succeed in the first one, you can still shift to the other one. We are living in a fast-changing world; we need a backup job or knowledge to survive. You should take it positively; whichever you choose will benefit you. This has become normal country because if you decided to look for job based on the course you studied, honestly you will never have a job. You will see someone how studied agricultural science working in the bank and this has been happening for a very long time just because it is very difficult to get a job from your field of study, it is not general but majority are facing this challenges. So far someone is still leaving in this world, it is very important we look for a way to be surviving and that is why majority are switching which I don't see as a bad idea. Most of the rich men we are seen today are not making money from what they study in school.

I graduated in textiles; at the same time, I was enthusiastic about tech. So I learned a lot about development. I have lots of experience doing this. I completed quite a few freelance projects as a full-stack developer.
Since I just recently graduated, my job life will begin now. But recently I got an offer from an IT company as a full-stack developer; the salary range is quite good compared to my graduation sector.
I always feel great , and enjoy development. That is why I spent lot's of time doing this. But I graduated in a completely different sector , thinking about the job market. Since it has a great demand in my country. Also, my dream was always to have my own business; that is why I chose this sector for my graduation.
If I switch carriers now, would that make me an idiot? And am I being brain dead?
It am in so much confusion.
With the way life change some people these days, i will advice you not to miss any opportunity that will make you regret at the end, there are some opportunity that life will gives you that it will not be part of what you like and that is the same thing as your own, I didn't say you should take the accept another offer just because the salary is good, it is because of what life has for you, and those kind of opportunity are very hard to get when you missed them. There are many people who graduated with different skills and they like their work and what they are doing but life has its own plan for them, some will not have a good job and some will have a good job that will change their life, the choice is yours to decide if you are taking the offer or not.

Diversification of career is good if you have the opportunity to do, the reason is because you will not be tied down looking for a particular job, when a particular profession that you have seen not to be giving you the right opportunity that you want want , you can actually switch to another, and in this case you will never lack opportunities. More also, it good for someone to follow trend of things, if you have a skill that attracts very low demand, a wise person will always move to a skill with higher demand to boost job search and opportunities. In our society today, people with good skills are actually doing well, and depending on your academic certificate alone might not keep you feat enough in the labor market. There are many people today who have academic qualifications but they are actually surviving from the different skills they have. Sometimes there could be so much competition in your own skill around where you are living, by learning a new skill that might not be common, but in higher demand will definitely give you great both within, and out side your environment.

From your comment I understand that you are still a very young person. I would recommend that you don't worry, that life takes many turns and that whatever you decide you can always turn back, or you can even develop both activities at the same time, if you are very passionate about either of them. It's never too late to change sectors, many older people have reinvented themselves, and you have your whole life ahead of you. In addition, with the rise of AI, many say that in a future of so much uncertainty, the most flexible and best adapt to changes will triumph, so I wouldn't be so sure that the decision you make now will be so decisive in your life.

You shouldn't be in any form of confusion. If for anything, I believe you made a wise decision switching to tech. It's the same thing I did, though mine isn't in tech. I've a complete turnaround from my first field to what I do now. How you find out if you're in a right profession is if what you do to earn a living gives you excitement and joy. It's like paying someone to indulge their passion. You're having fun, and still earn from it. There's money in tech. Though I'm too old to start cramming codes and all that in tech, if not I would've also gone there. A huge part of my brain is now compartmentalized for daddy's duties 🙈

You should build your career on the subject on which you have completed your Honours or Masters, but if you do not like the subject on which you are completing your engineering in terms of employment, then you can switch to another profession. However, the most important thing is that you are educated, in that case, getting a job is not a big deal. Since you feel most comfortable in the IT sector, you should build your career here. However, if you have taken textile, if possible, build a career there and if you do not like it, then you can set yourself up in IT.

I’d say chase your dream of owning your own business but don’t quit your job just yet. I don’t know where you live but it’s expensive to be without a job nowadays plus the job market these days is awful. You can start your business while working - most IT roles are hybrid or fully remote so that gives you flexibility to run your business,
You are right mate, I'd also advice same, better to continue with his current job and not quite unless he have gotten another job in his area of study. It's not just about getting a different job based on his educational qualification but is it a better offer with a higher pay compare to the current job he has now. That's what he must consider first before leaving the job. Some people make the mistake of resigning from their current job because they are looking for another better offer after which they would job hunt for a long time before finally getting a good job. About starting a business while still continuing the job, it actually depends on the kind of business, some business is time demanding, especially when you are just starting.

Switching careers is not going to make you an idiot, IMO, it is perfectly normal to change career paths when you discover something you are passionate about or an opportunity that better align with your interest and financial goals. In my country many people have switched career paths, and some have gone on to build successful careers in completely different fields. This is largely, because after they graduating from higher institutions they found that there were no adequate job opportunities provided by the government, so as a Nigeria the way manner you suit yourself by figuring things out and creating opportunities for yourself the better for you, because the government won't sort things out for you. In terms of switching carrier one should make appropriate enquiry about a particular carrier he's switching to, and understand the don't and does of that field, because many has switch carrier base on pair pressure, a carrier they knew nothing about but just because a friend is on that field they suddenly find it pleasing to go into it, and come back with regrets, don't get it twisted, switching carrier is good when you quite have a canal knowledge of the exact carrier, by so doing you are good to go, after all no knowledge is a waste anyways.

I wondered what "carrier" is, lol; apparently it is career. In any case, I would say that you are NEVER late. I am nearing 40, and I have had 3 different careers in my life, and I would say that it is obvious that I am going to have another one as well. You just have to learn to network and sell; that is the most important part. I am not bad at selling myself and my services; I know how to do that, and if someone asks you, "Could you do this thing for me?" and offers you money, say yes even if you can't, and learn on the job.
If you do a bad job, do not take their money; that is the nice thing to do, but at least next time you will have experience. I have spent many years learning while having another job. When I was in hotels, I learned how to write good English and became a content writer; when AI took that, I was learning how to make games. Now ı am making games, and I am learning AI on how to create agents and do the work for me in many fields. Just keep on learning.

I think first things first, we have to edit that carier to career, lol. Honestly I think I human adaptability is one the biggest flex, I've have heard seen alot of career change on the quest for a better life, I've had a friend that graduated with me with BSc in Engineering end up working in accounting because of the job opportunities available to him, he earns way more than me because of how huge the company he works for is, so it's paramount to diversify when the opportunities present itself

Switching your career is just like having diverse businesses, it only help you to make more money rather than depriving you from your progress. When you switch your career, it must be for a reason, maybe your former skill or qualification must have been very obsolete or seems to have lots of competitors. Having different skills is very good, and the I'll make you not to remain stucked at one place. Not every career are updated, there are skills that are no longer invoke, and when you have such skill, you do yourself the favour of learning a new skill to remain informed, and updated.

I have changed careers multiple times in my life and I can confidently tell you change is the only thing constant in this life and if it is your turn to change, you should change and not fight it. and yes, you will feel like an idiot making the worse mistakes in life but I mean after a while, you will feel everything start to adjust and make sense again. I mean I'm speaking from my experience, I know how long it took me to feel comfortable switching careers, thinking I have already spent years in tech why would I now be switching to writing but I completely love what I do right now.

You said it clearly that the pay in this acquired skill is far better than you would get with your degree if you were to be employed on your degree, that's to show you where value lays, you will be the "idiot" if you decide to leave value to pursue a career thay you aren't sure will pay the bills enough to give you a better life. Sometimes in life our initial path of choice may not be the path with which we get to build our lives upon at the end of the day, I've seen doctors who resign to pursue another career path and they became so successful in their new career path, so it is very okay to change a career path if the need for such arises that you do. You will not be regarded any less for such moves, what will matter at the time will be your level of success in your new path.

I agree, i think the desire to change professions is the highest form of adaptation because we are able to step out of our comfort zone when industry needs and job opportunities are constantly changing actually. For me, my degree certificate never limited my career choices. I see it as a form of preparation, though I cannot denied that I cannot pursue a profession that requires specialized competence, such as doctor or a nuclear expert. Considering at the meantime my emergency fund and protection funds are sufficient, I continue to pursue my career in the export import and freight forwarding business. Simple story, one of my colleague offered me the chance to migrate to New Zealand. In a casual talking, I asked fim what I should do there ? and he suggested that I can be a teaching assistant, saying it would be good for a slow living lifestyle so I can still mange my old business. Only need to take a year short course. From that conversation, I realized the world is vast, opportunities are wide open and awaits our curiosity to explore it. Increasing experience We should become wiser and more knowledgeable.

I don't think you are an idiot and you are not making any foolish decisions honestly, you have two wonderful opportunities ahead of you and it's understandable to be confused and not want to make decisions that will affect you in the long run. You just graduated and you have interest in tech and you have been offered a job with a salary that's okay . My advice is that you choose objectively, if the IT job offers you a very good salary and also gives you room to grow and do other things, you can pursue it and still do your business and other things you want to do. Because it's not what you studied, it shouldn't make you fear to pursue what you have interest in. So it's understandable to be confused now, but check the two options and see the one you can grow from now.

There is nothing wrong with switching your career, although it only depends on some factors such as; Does this current career path make you happy? Or the path you intend to switch to? On the long wrong which path is more closely aligned with your future goals and where you see yourself in the nearest future. The truth is sometimes what we think we want is not what we really need, and life is directing us into what we never thought of doing. So if you have the opportunity to switch career path and you believe you will find more fulfillment in that area, then you don’t have to feel like you are being unwise about it.

Both of your skill sets could even enable you to run a business of your own. If I were in your shoes, I would take the IT job as my primary occupation (assuming it offers a regular salary) and, after a few months, see if I could manage my schedule to launch a textile business as a side venture.
The priority is to secure a more stable income, which is generally easier to achieve as an employee. This also offers a psychological advantage: you will gain a better understanding of how you should treat your own future employees.

You don't know how lucky you are that you feel great as a developer and that at the same time, you have the skill and still have access to a good paying job in that area, how else do you want things to go for you? It is not always the case that you are going to use the first degree you acquired in higher institution, sometimes, the highest you will get from those degree is connection that opens you up for other opportunity that will end up paying you well. Life does not always follow a linear part and this is the reason we have a lot of people that you find in different industry that did not even do their first degree in that industry. Education does not always give us a clear end but in most cases, it points us to an expected end through the connections and relationship we were able to build through those phase. If there are opportunities or other areas with a good pay and you enjoy working in such a area, switching career is still not a bad idea.

This is one area where lots of scholars fail to take advantage of, during and after their time o schooling, many people graduate from school and tend to depend solely on their area of specialty thereby reducing their chances of attracting opportunities in other areas where they could have been useful if only they were technically inclined in those areas. Self development and continuous learning can be useful along the line especially in this age where the job market is very much demanding and may require someone to work beyond their area of expertise.

What makes you think that it's important to know what people think about the switch you'll do? It doesn't matter, never be bothered of what others think about what you're about to do. You should be careless about what they'll think because what's important is on how you're providing for your family, to yourself or to whoever you have to provide to. Do what you think is the right thing to do. In this economy, it's very terrible to see how much our salaries decreased a lot in purchasing power because of how quick the inflation rate rises.
