  • BitMart founder Sheldon Xia confirmed that the exchange suffered another security breach on November 2, describing the amount involved as relatively small.
  • Preliminary investigations suggest the attackers may be connected to the group behind the recent Mercado Bitcoin hack, with blockchain researchers identifying suspicious wallet transfers.
  • Xia acknowledged that BitMart’s security team remains severely understaffed following restructuring, employee departures, and disputes involving former personnel.
  • The latest incident comes as BitMart continues efforts to resolve customer withdrawal issues and financial difficulties after halting trading in August.

https://crypto.news/bitmart-confirms-hack-suspects-same-group-behind-mercado-bitcoin-attack/

So Bitmart is the next exchange that has been hit by hacks. They confirmed it thru the founder official X account: https://x.com/sheldonbitmart.
And it was said that it was the same group that hits Mercado Bitcoin exchanges.

If might not be as big as the Binance hack, but still, there are so much pressure on every crypto services. And with that, hacking continues and perhaps other top exchanges like Coinbase could be the next target.

Assuming that this arkham entity[1] includes all compromised addresses, it looks like the amount (based on the last two pages of transfers) is somewhere in the 150-200k $ range.

You would think though, that if users are unable to withdraw their funds unless their request is manually processed, that the funds are more secure.

This exchange is supposed to be bankrupt. How are they still running operations today? Furthermore, I thought they lost all users' coins in a boating accident. So this report of a 'hack' might actually be convenient for them.

I am going to be very suspicious about this and will also check to see the status of withdrawals on the site.

The exchanges need to strengthen their security. They are know what is happening and it is either they increase the strength of their security and protect users crypto

But I think BitMart has closed down? I am very surprised to see that the exchange has been hacked. Though it is a small amount of money.

The exchange claims to be shutting down since July with schedule badges on how they are going to shut down operations, and they claim to leave there withdrawal open, but during that period, more users have been complaining of not being able to process their withdrawal. I don't know the situation now until today when this news of their hack came out, but I'm still wondering how a half shut down exchanges suffer in the hands of hackers when their withdrawal is supposed to have been turned into to manual.

As I recall, they changed their minds about shutting down the entire platform, opting instead to keep a few services running. However, I haven’t heard any further details from them since then, specifically regarding what service still remains.

They do not seem to be keeping a lot of funds in their hot wallets since they stopped most users from making withdrawals. The hackers were only able to steal shitcoins from their Arbitrum wallet that don’t have a lot of liquidity to make much profits. BitMart is still holding around $53 million according to Arkham, but these are also extremely illiquid tokens. Security might not have been a major priority for this wallet that got drained because there wasn’t much real value that was worth protecting.

With their reputation, all the conspiracy minded people might suspect that they sent those tokens to the hackers themselves to distract from their current problems. It would give them an excuse to delay withdrawals for even longer.

The withdrawal issue have lingered since July till now, the last report I saw about the issue which was published this month of november, the exchange were proposing two possible ways for customers to recover their money. The exchange is supposed to be bankrupt, the fact that they have not been able to settle customers their money till today should tell that they don't have the money, so how come they are being hacked when they should have just settle customers and move on since July till date. Now, this is just an opportunity for them not to return customers funds.
