They put their best people on the kernel, etc. They put a random intern to maintain Bitcoin.

They obviously stopped because they didn't care to maintain it. Our ppa guy can't even keep his updated. Still waiting on .91

I think we can all learn a lesson, especially if you use Linux. Review and build it from source.

Perhaps, but this is not realistic for average users.  Most people have no idea what "source" is.  They could be coached to installing something off of the ubuntu app marketplace, where bitcoin isn't going to be now, but "build it from source" is utterly beyond them. Same goes for PPAs...that is really pushing the boundaries of what an average ubuntu user is going to know how to do.

Maybe those people need something more safe than the QT client anyway, but still.

Debian didn't remove or stop supporting bitcoin-qt, but ubuntu did.  This will arguably have taken more work than just leaving it in.

Only at the very beginning of the development cycle of a Ubuntu release are they strictly the same. Then Ubuntu has a development cycle where they break packages. At some point in their process they have a milestone called DebianImportFreeze. From this point on, packages will start to outdate in addtion to being actively broken.

Edit: instead of writing "strictly the same," I should have written "compiled from sources which are stricly the same." While Ubuntu sources packages start as unmodified Debian source packages, they are compiled differently and are binary-incompatible.

I've always used the ppa

I'm sure many people do, that's not the point.  Ubuntu is one of the largest GNU/Linux distros around, and their average user had access to bitcoin as part of their operating system.  It would be as if windows 7 had came with an option to install bitcoin via an optional windows update or something.  Today is release day for 14.04, perhaps it's worth reflecting on what we just lost.

Exactly, why would they include Bitcoin? I wouldn't expect anyone to. Not some anonymous os maintainer. I'd rather get it from the ppa and know the guy doing it. You must trust their signing keys.

At least the server version, everything is outdated except the essentials like apache and openssl. If you want secure out of the box you gotta use CentOs for server, they have everything updated. For Desktop i have no idea.

So it becomes an updating issue due to old software releases and a change in the database binaries when it updates to the newest edition

What a deeply disappointing decision from Ubuntu!

There should be a familial brotherhood between crypto-currencies and open source movements.
The philosophy behind both share many roots. It is mutually beneficial and logical for the two to support each other. The two need each other.

If anyone influencial in Canonical or Ubuntu is following this post...

I don't know where all this fuzz is coming from.
In the older versions bitcoin was available but not updated.
So If you are still running bitcoind on 12.04 / 13.10 and didn't compile it from source nor used the bitcoin PPA please check your version

It should display 0.9.0.1 but I think you are 0.3.2.4 or something.

PPA download doesn't work?

Sorry, I'm pretty new, but I followed instructions to get the bitcoin software from the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bitcoin/bitcoin
sudo apt-get update

(both completed OK, but then)

sudo apt-get install bitcoin
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree       
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package bitcoin

any ideas?  Are we just waiting on Matt Corallo?

is not simple bitcoin the package
