For those of us who get a lot of forum notifications, and the mods that get reports need to have a simple way to start/stop all forum notifications temporarily for example for when we are away and do not wish to come home to hundreds of emails, and to reject all attempts to send private messages to let people know we're currently away and not accepting messages.

Agree. This is definitely necessary. I can't believe SMF doesn't have this.

It's something which would indeed be useful for the moderators of the forum I'm sure. I think another way instead of out right rejecting the message would be to allow the person to send the message, but the receipt doesn't receive a notification when on disturb mode. Also, you could have a auto reply option which would send a message back stating that you are "Do not disturb" and may not be able to respond immediately.
