Hi,
I just recently came into the game just this past Sunday, unfortunately I didn't think much of bitcoins and mining back in 2009 when I first saw it coming out.  Iv been doing a lot of reading on all the different areas, and this is a lot of stuff to learn.

It comes down to this:
I can invest and trade like I do in the stock market - but I would rather *not* since I am not familiar with this exchange.
Or, I could CPU mine with a couple computers from work.

(x2) Intel i3-2130 and (x2) Core2duo 3Ghz, 4-8GB RAM
I also could get a computer or 2 running @ home since it is also a flat rate electric bill.

The i3's would run 24/7 and the Core2duos only at night.  No machine expenses or electric costs since its a flat rate monthly electric bill.

Is CPU mining profitable?  How much could I make in a month running these machines?
If there is something a bit more profitable I have to invest in I could do $2000.  The problem I have seen with bitcoins is the machine costs will never pay off if i get a 2Th machine.

There aren't a lot of CPU only coins left. Dimecoin is one of the most prominent. My advice to you is to get some AMD GPUs and mine some sort of scrypt coin. Or if you really want to, you can mine DIME Smiley PM me

CPU mining bitcoin stopped being profitable 2 and a half years ago. Today you'd spend $1000 in electricity to earn $1 worth of bitcoin, so no...

Assuming that the price of bitcoin continues to outpace the difficulty you can make a profit mining with ASIC hardware. There are some good deals on the last generation of miners if you don't mind used, or you can use hosted mining which is what I'm doing.

I wouldn't GPU mine at this point. scrypt ASICs are arriving on the scene and changing the game considerably.

If you're mining Memorycoin, it's possible to get a couple bucks a day best case scenario:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=439874.0

You'd probaby need a core i7 and decent cooling/air flow so to avoid overheating your PC though.

While I agree you can make money that way, I'm against supporting the continued inefficiency of using GPUs to mine. It's just a huge waste of electricity compared to ASICs.

This was one of the coins I saw on another website that was recommended to mine making a couple bucks a day. No lie, I would be happy if I could make about $100 a month on the side running a few computers at work and one at home if I can do it with the current hardware available.
Once you start factoring in hardware investment, I really don't ever see the money coming back into your pocket. Unless you are constantly buying the latest hardware, mining with it a couple months and selling the hardware to buy the latest and greatest all over again.

Could I make any real world profit if i were to put a Graphics Card on each machine mining something other than Bitcoins?

Not much profit. Your card would only ROI in like 5 months or so.
