IF 7970 gets 700Mhash at 250watts

The price of HD7970s is really high in the UK at the moment.Starting off from £416 and above (from a reputable site.Poor sites quote a really low price but then don't have the product to back it up or you get scammed out of money for something that doesn't exist on those sites.)

What kind of performance and power use can I expect from this card for mining? What about overclockability and other mods (overvolting,e.t.c)? Is there a more optimised version of GUIMiner now that I can use on my PC?

My HD6950 uses about 220W more (measured from wall) when mining at just over 400MHashs (403MHashs to be exact) with unlocked shaders. Is that good for a HD6950?

5970 clocked at 820/300 will get between 363-372Mhash per core.  1452-1488 Mhash.  in my experience, the cards are not stable above 825 without overvolting which will greatly increase power usage and lower mh/j

Yep, at current prices 7970 = really bad value for a mining card.

... 800Mh from a 5970? In my experience the average 5970 gets about 820-840MHz core at stock V -> about 365-380Mh/s/core.
With one 80+ gold and one 80+ bronze 1kW PSU, my quad rigs were ~1240W at the plug, with 2 80+ gold units a hair under 1200W.
At 1125mV core and again clocked to max stable... slightly north of 810Mh/card average, while hash/J went from 2.57 to 2.32 and primary GPU VDDC slaves got uncomfortably hot.

Imo if you got the space, 5850 stays king. High hash/$, decent hash/J, low enough power density to make cooling a relatively minor issue.

That said, I'll be getting a 7970 anyways. Why? SHINY!

I've found mine to be stable 24/7 on air (81C on core #2).  That's at 890/200 MHz @ 1139mV -- I don't remember what stock voltage is.  Each core puts down around 406 MH/s and on my single-5970 mining/gaming box, and with a 6-core Phenom II it draws about 460W at the plug.  I can usually knock that down to about 430-440W by disabling some cores, but I'm too lazy since I switch between mining and gaming so often

Stock is 1.05V  You are running an 8.4% overvolt.  You are getting about 9% increase in hashing for a roughly 28% increase in power consumption.  Most wouldn't consider that a good trade.

Oh wow, I dropped it back to stock voltage @ 805MHz and I'm showing about 100W less on my Killowatt meter!  I'm still getting about 367-368 MH/s per core too.

Edit: I disabled 5 of my 6 cores and bumped it up to 810MHz now I'm down to 335-340W @ 370 MH/s per core.  That's down from about 470W @ 406-410 MH/s per core!
