Thats the problem,  too many people are worried about efficiency by the time it takes to make a design 20-30% more efficient other companies are pushing out what they have and pushing the hashrate 5x. Thats why btc mining will meet an inflection point very soon and the arms race will have to slow down with the pot of gold harder to get.  Wouldnt make sense to spend 10 million to mine 1 million. Buy the coins is better.

I bet we will stick to 28nm for the whole year.

Nobody achieved asic of 20nm so far.

You are so wrong. The new KnCMiner Neptunes use a 20nm chip.

Nobody saw working neptune yet, so it does not exists. I'm no longer believing in preorder markets.

The only ASICS that aren't preorder are Bitmain, Gridseed and Cointerra. That's it.

Bitmain and Gridseed all the way.
These companies have their sh*t togheter, doing what they promise.

Btw, I heard of this new company: Spondoolies. (What a ridiculous name)
They still have to prove themselves but they should be delivering their hardware next month.

The problem is the chips wont be getting much faster. 20nm chips is about as far as they will go for quite some time. My prediction is you won't see 10TH rigs till next year

What if we get to 1nm? Then all we can do is build ridiculously large rigs with loads of chips in them, so it has more hashrate.
1 nm won't be possible using silicon. That is about 2 atoms wide.

Best choice you would ever do.

I believe that Spondoolies will produce the first 50 terrahash miner.

And even if you could, elektrons would have a significant probability to quantum tunnel through the silicon, which you don't want ofcourse.
I saw an interesting video on this lately, for the people who like to see it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtI5wRyHpTg

The first (effectively) 50TH miner will be built by a group of mathematicians at Cambridge University and will exploit a new SHA-256 attack. It'll run on a network of standard workstations and servers and the code will be written in scala, using akka remote actors.

ETA sometime in 2015. A big prize is waiting.

I'm not sure about that but what will happen when the difficulty just rises too high and miners will be useless? Should they just be thrown away?
