Most questions from newcomers to the forum are repeat questions and whenever people are asked why they didn't search first they insist they did and did not find what they were looking for...

Insert discussion about possible improvements to search facility here:

Not sure how to better the filter but I do want to say that there is a need for some type of upgrade or tweaking.  It seems like a hit and miss that I will have an abundance of information or nothing at all.

I've got other ways like sub forums to find what I'm looking for but I don't think it should be that hard to locate info. For someone who is new here, I can see how it can be frustrating.  That being said I think people need to try a little harder to find info instead of just asking obvious questions over and over again which happens far to often.

This is definitely one of our priority items. We'll be working through the core modules first but I think this will be in the second wave of plugins we are planning to work on.

This is a nice idea, and with this the 90sec time interval for making a search for the newbies should also be lifted.

THe only thing it REALLY needs is some speed!
Searching takes like 5-10 seconds every time and that makes people not want to search, think of it...

Some features I'd like to see regarding Search:

- Sort by, especially sort by date.
- Support of "quotes" to find the exact match of words.
- Search notifications: If new posts match an entered query, get a notification.
For example, if you want to buy Casascius coins, you may want to get notifications for 'WTS casascius'

Couldn't the forum simply implement google search?
When I need to search something here, I type it on google followed by "site:bitcointalk.org" and the results are considerably more relevant than searching through the forum's search box.

You can already google search directly if you go in to the search tab at the top left of the page near your profile tab.

You can already google search directly if you go in to the search tab at the top left of the page near your profile tab.

Or you can just bookmark this.
https://www.google.com/search?q=site:bitcointalk.org

And append to the end of the search query.

The problem with the current search system is that it only searches the current scope instead of the whole forum.

This should be changed so no matter what page you are, it searches the whole forum. Also if I type in a username, it should load that profile page.

IMO the selective searching based on what board you are on is a feature.

If I am on the Marketplace and looking for [WTS] threads, I don't want to see threads from Project Development.

Perhaps a better alternative would be to give the option to search globally or locally (within the current board) on the quick search menu. If you go to advanced search, you can change the scope to global.

Don't use the "search" box on top right, use "search" on the blue menu at the top. Then you will see a "google search" box. Use the google one, it is recommended by the forum:

Quote
Google search is recommended. It is usually more accurate, and searches through the forum's own search engine are rate-limited

But how would I search for the FAQ?

Less cynically, but just as valid: no one reads documentation...

+1.
You are right, most of them don't read documentation. Sad It makes them feel that they are wasting time. Lips sealed

I found an option for advanced search just now :
Click on the search icon and a page will appears which gives better search options with nice features. There is Google search too. Smiley Am I wrong about anything?

Kindly,
