I installed Bitcoin 0.5.1 a few days ago. I activated the "Directory". It started to update the directory. 48 hours later, some 50 Gb interchanged, and a warnig by my Internet provider that I had conusmed my download and upload monthly capacity, and "directory" still showing 92%, I aborted, and unistalled Bitcoin.

Any hint?

what is this 'directory' you speak of? my bitcoin 0.5.1 has nothing of the sort that i can find.. and the blockchain is only about 1.15gb at the moment

This just shows that we need to make a thin BTC client or at least make the whole thing more scalable :

-too big to download 1.2 GB over internet for some
-too big to store 1.2 GB and growing on HDD

there are indeed javascript wallets that do not require the blockchain download - search this forum, i have seen mention of a few

Its actually the "address book" button.

As I said, it was not a 1 Gb download, it was like 50 Gb total up and down traffic.

This just shows that we need to make a thin BTC client or at least make the whole thing more scalable :

There is a thin bitcoin client that doesn't download the blockchain. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Electrum

Also StrongCoin httpa://www.strongcoin.com (I'm the founder) is a javascript based client which also doesn't require you to download the blockchain.
