The same is true on Windows.  I'm amazed you apparently hadn't run into 7zip'ed archives before - e.g. in the hours before the coin was launched, so that you were ready to go. would tar'd and gzip'd have been better?  I hear OS X handles those natively (screw the Windows users, though - oh wait, the 7zip client can handle those  )
