Bitcoiners are always griping that the e-currency needs more users, not more publicity. The intersection of Bitcoin and porn, however, is likely to bring both. But the question is a logical one: if Silk Road brought Bitcoin into use by letting people buy drugs and other useful things semi-anonymously, perhaps taboo-but-legal sites could do the same. “Bitcoin won’t be popular until porn sites start accepting it as a discrete alternative to credit cards, which are a huge barrier to entry I think for many of their potential customers,” writes one user over on Reddit http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/o97xa/as_usual_porn_will_be_the_driving_force_of_a_new/ . Another pointed out that porn sites have been early adopters of technology before: “Porn used SD video cameras like the Sony VX1000 that proved small chip video was good enough for the small screen. The VCR, the DVD all owe their success, at least partially, to porn.”

It’s not that it hasn’t been tried: Wetcoin.co.cc launched back in July, an “adult-orientated website” that charged small amounts of BTC for downloads and required no registration. (The site is now defunct.) Cam4.com was another experiment, now defunct, which allowed users to tip amateur girls with proprietary “tokens,” which could be bought on the secondary market at xxxcoin.com (defunct https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=24913.0 ), for Bitcoins.

The blog Bitcoin Porn is a Tumblr with information about Bitcoin interspersed with porn. There are no purchases possible, but you can support the site with a BTC donation. There is an associated podcast as well as a Twitter https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin_Porn .

There is the argument that the fledgling currency should try to associate itself with more acceptable ecommerce https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=38107.0 like bit-strawberries rather than be thought of as the medium of exchange for drugs and porn. But needless to say, if Bitcoiners could get enough adult sites to accept Bitcoin, the e-currency would gain access to a massive audience. “That was actually the idea I had in mind when I bought titcoins.com, but I haven’t had any time to bring it to fruition,” another Bitcoin-Redditor commented.

Just checking out the news and seen this Smiley The article brings a good point regarding services offered.  So far the only adult material I have seen offered with ladies on cams or even ladies offering themselves, seems to be shot down in some ways.   Very surprised the bitcams thread wasn't mentioned  Cheesy

Noticed in the comments a plug for http://www.staremagazine.com/ which did or does accept Bitcoin, on top of being I think one of the earlier merchants to try out Bit Pay, so in a way porn did really come through, because I believe Bit Pay is going to be one of the bigger technologies to push Bitcoin.

some believe that the porn industry and their revenue streams are deeply rooted in the establishment.  Embarrassed

but maybe indie porn will come to the rescue  Kiss

I understand the risk of a Bitcoin only site/service/product but why not offering it as an optional payment method.

I mean bitpay makes integration cost negligible.  Companies have nothing to lose (well except chargeback fees, fraud, and 14% "high risk" merchant accounts).

I remember Stare, the webmaster wanted me to shoot for them back when they were first starting out (I think around 2003 or 2004?) but I wasn't old enough.

Is there a turn-key solution for a Bitcoin payment gateway?  I would love to be able to take Bitcoins without having to manually add/delete memberships.

You know, I think this article is right.  The fastest way to mass adoption of bitcoin is to link it to porn.  After all, the only thing the internet is good for is porn, right?  On a more serious note, walk in to any major datacenter and ask them who their biggest customers are.  They will point to huge racks *full* of servers that serve porn sites -- not joking.  It is a large industry.

Porn and online gaming are going to be big industries that will be linked to Bitcoin in the near future. I'm not too sure how I feel about this. On one hand, it would propel the currency into fairly widespread use, but on the other hand, it would put it in the 'only undesirables use that stuff' category.  That's one of the critiques people had about Silk Road. It gave Bitcoin a bad smell to the mass populace.

Personally, I think focusing on getting 'regular' users into the currency is what we need to do. Look at Chicago Cabbie and the work Pheneous Gage (sp?) is doing with him. I'm working with some local ranchers on meat sales, and there's a guy (I think in South America) selling organic beans. Bitcoin could kick ass for small merchants. I worry that porn might present a problem.

after he sells the beans, what does he spend the money on?

part of the money he gets from selling beans would be spent on personal items, which could easily include porn.

bean sellers are real people too.

There's a difference between 'could' and 'does'. Since we don't know that he spends the money on porn and there's a large segment of the population who doesn't use porn, it's not logical to assume he does. He might but he didn't say.

well yes, i do see how porn might present a problem.

also for some people, the lack of porn might present a problem.

You have no idea how much I wish the forum had a 'like' button right now. That was funny!

One reason they may like the established system: with credit cards, you can be charged by the minute at their site and get an outrageous credit card bill you would have never paid had you known. Credit cards can be billed without you authorizing every single little amount. Bitcoins can't be magically sucked out of your wallet, you have to pay ahead, and have time to reflect if your carnal desires are worth that amount of money before you press "send coins".

I think anybody who pays for porn on the internet has a major hole in the their head. I have friend of a friend of a friend of a friend that has never paid for porn, and watches it once a week to get marketing ideas and take a break for reading forum posts and to relieve pressure. If you want the name of the sites, just PM me, and the next time I see him I will ask him for the URLs. On a side note, do you think Ellyian is a pretty name for a girl?

That exchange of messages was one of the funnest ever..

"We are just fools. We insanely believe that we can replace one politician with another and something will really change. The ONLY possible way to achieve change is to change the very system of how government functions. Until we are prepared to do that, suck it up for your future belongs to the madness and corruption of politicians."

My best friend, who lives in Vegas, had a friend with the nickname 'Rabbit'. Once, he was over at Rabbit's home watching a football game. During the commercial his wife came into the room and then he left. He was back with this shitty grin on his face long before the commercial break ended. My friend looked at his wife, puzzled. She answered his unasked questions with, "That's why I call him Rabbit." True story!

In every case Titcoin is working extremely hard to make this happen.
We are looking to have the support of the adult entertainment industry before we launch the coin.
Subscribe to the twitter, facebook or mailinglist to be informed on the launch.
