Hey all,
total noob here...
I just got a couple of ants on ebay and they have already been shipped. (yay) I'm looking to have them both oc'd and powered by a single psu.
What's the best psu option for me?
I looked at some of the guides here and while the server psu's look cool and all, I'd prefer a more of a plug n' play approach with a regular psu. (both ants are the newer model with the pci-e connectors)
What are my options? what's the min wattage for a psu to run 2 oc'd ants somewhat safely?
ty in advance and have a great day

If you're on a budget, I'd just go with 2 500 or 600 W PSU's. Much cheaper. If budget doesn't matter, and you like to just connect 2 Ants to a single PSU, something like this would do: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139057

just get an 850w PSU and you will be fine. I have 860w corsair plat, 850 thermaltake gold and both have been running for many months without issue. Watts at the wall is around 810. Say 10% loss (conservative) it is only at 730watts.
PSU's are not rated for what they draw at the wall!!!!!!! They are rated for what they can deliver to the device.

would that work for 2 oc'd ants though? I've read some guides here that say 850W would be just fine for running them @180g/h (stock) are yours oc'd and both running on the 860w corsair? thx so much for your fast replies guys

Hey gamersglory, thanks for your input. I did see that on ebay and the guy selling it states that it runs great for 2 non oc'd ants. I just wanna make sure that I find something that is capable of running both of em oc'd... Also, the noise is supposedly a bit high on them... Found this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028Would this be capable of powering 1 oc'd ant safely?? The price on these is just unbeatable. 2 of them are still less than the 1000w one and have some change left to buy smokes . So yes, budget does matter a lil bit. Also would this be super easy to just plug n play? As in connect the pci-e cables, jump the psu and be done with it? Or does it still require soldering/cutting wires etc...? Is there a guide on how to jumper this specific unit? Corsair cx600? or do you just connect the green with any black? again, thanks for your patience and for your quick replies

Paper clip trick the PSU, plug in the ethernet, power on PSU, and configure your Ant.

Only 88% efficient, if you OC Ants they'll be around 400 Watts maybe more. 800 Watts/850 Watt PSU is 94% so mathematically exceeding the theoretical limit. Stock clock, 360 Watts *2 = 760 Watts/850 PSU = 85% = no worries. Basically you want 1000 Watts or more to be safe, without worrying about tripping the PSU.

Not Avalon, BFL, or Spondoolie loud, but the fans are pretty audible. Also, underneath the desk might not get hit by your office AC vents or units. Just in case it gets hot down there, maybe throw a small desk fan just blow some air on it. Of course I don't condone running anything at work or office, could be considered stealing in some circles, but if you're going to do it, make sure it doesn't overheat.

Some units like to squeal when fans are accelerating to 2800 rpm.

Just got my 2 ants... YAY need some help with setting the jumper/payperclip for the psu. is there a diagram on which pins need to be connected? I understand how and why it is done but not sure which 2 also, once it is powered on and hooked up to the network, do I just access it by the IP that's listed on the sticker or is there anything else I need to do to configure it? install any mining software? Also I have my wallet set up locally with the Armory. I'm assuming that should not be a problem... Or do I need to set up a web wallet? So new to all this... thank you so much for all your help guys
