Bitcoin on TV! The Good Wife Riffs on Satoshi With ‘Mr. Bitcoin’

Adrianne Jeffries
2011-01-16

http://www.betabeat.com/2012/01/16/bitcoin-on-tv-the-good-wife-riffs-on-satoshi-with-mr-bitcoin/

The story went over well, for the most part, with the Bitcoin community; less so with The Good Wife community.

Quote
“This episode confused me.  Partly it was because the bitcoin story was boring, and dare I say it a bit stupid,” one commenter wrote. “What ever happened to all the ‘computer problems’ they had several episodes ago. Surely that has not just been dropped?” another viewer wrote. The Wall Street Journal dinged it for “requiring far too much attention to tedious detail.”

Yet many cared enough to google it apparently and one vendor signed up for bitpay within 23 minutes.

According to this there where 9.3 million viewers
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Good_Wife_%28season_3%29#cite_note-12

Wikipedia got about 17 thousand more hits than usual. So we can guess around .1 % of the people who watched visited the Wikipedia page, which is the second hit on google. Who runs bitcoin.org? They should release the traffic info so us nerds can have more data.

There's been a fair bit of commentary on the lack of interest from the housewives who make up the majority of the show's audience.  Some people have quoted these people talking about superficial things and completely ignoring the point of the episode.

Despite this, we must realize that although nobody could expect interest from all of the show's viewers, new attention did materialize... a Google/Wikipedia spike actually happened, and the episode garnered a fair bit of publicity (including a mention on Fox Business) and business as well (BitPay's new client).  The episode was a good bit more effective than I and many others thought it would be, and has definitely been a good thing for Bitcoin.

Wikipedia spike:

You can find it by going to the bitcoin page, clicking view history (at the top right), then find page view statistics (just above the history, on the right)

Who went on there as Mr Bitcoin and told them it was real? Maybe you should have added that the show said they are worth $3 which they were a few weeks back but its back up to 7ish.

Haha I guarantee you they will not care. "Mr Bitcoin" should have pretended to be the real Mr Bitcoin and said it made him upset that they were mean and did not like his bitcoins.

the world isn't ready for bitcoin?

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion.

I just read the WSJ's review of the episode. The writer seemed to be a little annoyed at how boring the who bitcoin case in the show was.

I think that's a pretty clever way to present the best possible emotional context for bitcoin at this time: banality.

No one gets particularly excited or awed by the idea of PayPal... to some, the name is one that ignites anger. The show even threw in the whole "but bad people might use this, like drug dealers and child pornographers!", and at the end of it all? Yawn. The over-attention to detail almost seems deliberate, designed to make it seem to technical and boring to possibly be malicious.

When viewers find out Bitcoin is real, they may ignore it. They may buy some. But what they won't do is start panicking about how destructive it is, or trying to see what's wrong with it, or accusing it of being a scam or ponzi scheme. The show seems to have neutralized such objections.

And for that, I salute the writers of the episode. Well done, sirs! Smiley

Bitcoin is the ultimate freedom test. It tells you who is giving lip service and who genuinely believes in it.

There's been a fair bit of commentary on the lack of interest from the housewives who make up the majority of the show's audience.

If it had a different name, like "Elite Women Lawyers of Chicago", maybe we wouldn't expect it to be about a church-going cupcake-baking house frau, and it might get more than housewife viewers... Like "House", it is not about a house at all. It should be called "Asshole Genius Doctor Always Gets The Fourth Diagnosis Correct".

i found the episode boring mostly myself, never watched any other episodes and won't
the highlight of the episode was in the beginning and at the end

nonetheless i think they done a good job bringing bitcoin to people's attention and probably causing a bit of controversy which i think was the whole point of it.

Check this out: http://stats.grok.se/en/201201/bit%20coin

Compare "bit coin" with "bitcoin". It shows me that they are taking the time to spell in correctly.
