I remember growing up in the 70's and everything made in Japan was considered shit. China was a communist country, one of which I felt I would never be able to visit even if I had a passport and visa. Now all you need is a visa and book a flight. Times, they are a changin'!

And I remember growing with toys Made in China. They all broke within 5 minutes of their designated NORMAL use. Not to be a douche, but everything made in China is of POOR quality.

I couldn't imagine a period where Japanese built stuff was considered cheap crap... Japanese made are exceptional when it comes to quality mate Please understand the point I was making. I'm not speaking about now, but back in the 60's and 70's. Not every product was perceived as bad--just most. The following is a quote from another forum I found via Google to help drive my point home: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=633258When I was a kid (1970s), "made in Japan" = "cheap" still seemed to be a commonly-held perception (I remember cheap toys still coming from there), but, by the late 1970s, I think it was clearly (and rapidly) on the decline.
By the 1980s, Japanese cars and electronics were clearly superior in quality, and there was a lot of angst in the business press about how "Japan, Inc." was going to take over the world, economically -- by then, I was in business school, and it was a very common topic. Feel free to following the link I provided. You'll be welcomed with a quick read and interesting insights. ~Bruno~

i agree with you my friend. People who use the phrase "my friend" make me want to read their posts in a thick Russian accent with unnecessary vulgarities. Like, "Chinese products are for pussies my friend."

It is true that many products from China have poor quality, but almost all products from US are low quality.

Hey guys, i just bought this swiss knife thingy 3 days ago, unfortunately i can't use it anymore. When i checked it says "Made in China" . If more people actually considered the quality of the purchase (ie touched it and looked at it) before buying it, this might be different. Instead, I believe most people buy the cheapest of something, pushing good quality manufacturers out of business, leaving only those that only make cheap things to get larger. What made you buy that particular knife instead of other higher priced or higher quality ones?

its not china's fault. a guy goes into a factory and say...i want you to build me this as cheep as possible. facory guy says ok it will be like this, other guy says ok lets do it! most of the crap my girlfriend buys is crap. crap crap crap. does not last. she never really looks at quality. i should have know when she traded in her 1990 volkswagen GTI for a 1993 ford escort...should have left her then...baby welcome to dumpsville, population you...sigh...where was i going with this? china thats right, they can make anything once they put their mind to it. now thats a huge generalization...not all fords are crap....just 99.9% of them

What's the difference between poor quality and low quality? Poor quality is what poor people can afford - low quality is any product purchased by the US government for 25 times its actual manufacturing cost. Thanks mate, i now know how poor the US government is.

I remember reading some place that companies use China as a manufacturer(one reason) because they're built to their specifications more precisely, and cheaper.

What else... lower wages + no social protection = cheaper production = +profit... Event thus now the economic leeches (AKA corporations) are changing their production to Vietnam where wages are even lower than China. Keep wearing with proud Nike, Puma, Adidas... and all other made in "where it gets cheaper to made" outfits and stuff (until our economies collapse with so many imported junk that is).
