I am not a big fan of the Daily Mail. But I don' think that they are any worse off than the other popular British trash, such as The Guardian. All of the major dailies in the UK do have a tarnished reputation. And DM is no different.

Not even close.

Dude, The Guardian isn't perfect, but I can't believe you just compared it to the DM. It's about as far away as it is possible to get in a British daily newspaper.

I think the Mail is actually worse than The Sun/The Daily Star and other tabloids, because it pretends to be serious. But all three are absolute shite.

The Guardian isn't that popular, it has 1/10th of the circulation of The Sun and The Mail.

Anyway I would personally avoid ALL tabloids while looking for informed opinions in British papers, best off sticking to broadsheets like The Guardian, The Times and the Telegraph. Again, they're not perfect but at least they tend to print facts, not fiction or misleading shouty headlines.

Why make such a life changing decision at such a young age. 9 years old!!!! still a child should be playing with friends , toys etc not trying to change sex. why oh why do the NHS proritise such treatment when people who are genuinely ill and need treatement for cancer etc are denied it because it is deemed too expensive. What going to happen in a few years when this child decides they want to be the sex they were actually born !!!

well, i don't know where i stand in this issue but to be fair, how would you feel if you are a 9 year old stuck in a girl's body, when you feel like a boy inside? that can torment you growing up feeling ostracized - like something is wrong with you, and other people keep a distance because of it.

i guess if it's affect the kid so much that he/she is depressed, it could be a good idea to consider it. if the kid is not so affected by it, then maybe wait? also kids are developing at 9-10 years old, so maybe giving them those drugs gives them more time to develop into the body/appearance that they want.
When I was 9 yrs old I wanted to be a womble, wonder if the NHS would fund "Womble change surgery"or a magical pill that would turn me in a womble?

The Daily Mail is what would happen if internet bloggers got control of their own printable newspaper, I wouldn't put too much stock in it.

OK.. so far you guys had problem because the article was taken out of the Daily Mail. Leave the Daily Mail. Let's look at the other dailies... What about the Telegraph? One of the most popular dailies in the UK.

Sex change drugs 'to be offered to nine-year-olds'

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/children_shealth/10839063/Sex-change-drugs-to-be-offered-to-nine-year-olds.html

Quote
Monthly injections of the drugs, known as hypothalamic blockers, are used to slow the development of the children’s sexual organs by blocking the production of the hormones testosterone and oestrogen. In boys this prevents the voice from lowering and the development of facial hair, while in girls it stops the menstrual cycle and breast development, in each case making any future sex change operation simpler.

If this is true then that is fcked up. Nine year old kids dont know anything so it will be parents decision, and im afraid that some sick parents could abuse this, like we wanted a girl we got a boy lets change her sex...

In the UK there are just two types of News papers. Either right-wing or the left-wing. There are no neutral newspapers. And only the right-wing newspapers will publish stories like this one.

I know of one such case, I am sure there are more, in the US where the nine-year-old male child of a Lesbian couple felt sure he was the wrong gender. He was administered drugs which essentially chemically castrated him. When I learned of the case, he was 12 or 13 and living as a teenage girl. Where do they find doctors willing to prescribe these drugs in such an appalling situation? A child may be confused about many things regarding his/her place in the world. Isn't that an occasional part of being a child (or any human for that matter.)?That should never mean the child is given the responsibility of such a consequential decision. It is madness!

Child services people were probably scared of being labelled as homophobic, if they act against the couple. Feels sad for the kid... but there is nothing that we can do about it.  Sad

This is child abuse, nothing more.

Adults with severe mental illness (transvestites) should be given treatment instead of mutilation.  Children who exhibit similar symptoms (which are probably just a phase) should not have their bodies destroyed with drugs.  In mild cases it should be allowed to pass, and in extreme cases they should be given drugs to help them develop properly into their natural sex (the one that they are born as, testicles = man, ovaries = woman).

As for the Daily Mail, it is the best UK news source.  Is it 98% sensationalist trash?  Of course, but that other 2% has more content then the rest of the UK media combined.  Whenever I see an interesting story about the goings on in the UK it is always in the Daily Mail.  I never see interesting stories in the state-run media, or the other papers.

What adults should do with their body, is up to them. If they want to mutilate themselves, it is fine to me (as long as they don't harm any one else). But I agree with you on the kids. They should not be harmed. No sex change operation should be performed on the children, until they reach an age where they can think independently about it.

Just in case you guys were interested, in the US, there is no minimum age for which kids can get hormone treatments. The reason this is news is because the NHS controls the UK's healthcare system. The fact that these drugs were unavailable in the UK for so long is because the NHS is a universal healthcare system that's subject to government bureaucracy most of us are against. They've been available in the states because our healthcare system is based on supply and demand. The fact that these treatments are just now coming available in the UK should be looked at as a testament to how slowly bureaucracy can affect healthcare. By being social fascists who think the world should work the way you want, you're actually giving reason for a government body to control people's healthcare.
