I think the thing driving it is the promise of a Dark Market.  That would make it worth something for sure.  As far as it taking over bitcoin or litecoin, I seriously doubt it.  Without that market it will crash down like all the other pump and dumps.  As somebody mentioned earlier, NXT will probably absorb this feature soon.  They had said they were working on anonymity and a market as some of their goals.  I think the market is coming to alpha soon but not sure.  Darkcoin is just like bitcoin or litecoin but with anonymity thrown in.  Some of the new POS coins can add that just as a feature, just one feature among a dozen.  Bitcoin and litecoin can just add coin shufflers for people that want anonymity.  From what I read, Darkcoin was just copying an already existing bitcoin shuffler, just built it into the code.  If so, that would mean it is just another copy and paste, with a pirated option added in.

BayAreaCoins your attitude and sentiment is excessively negative at best, but more than likely a display of pretty extreme arrogance. DRK has the potential to be a successful coin but like everything carries substantial risks (as does all speculative "investments"). Calling people that decide to have a go at buying into it "F....tards" is hardly helpful to people on here looking for genuine information. How you expect to attract customers and people who will engage with you when you put that sort of nastiness out into the ether is beyond me. Fortunately your demeaning language won't be taken notice of by any developer/entrepreneurs putting forward new ideas in this crypto arena and many people will just write you off.

Do you really believe no altcoin will ever be a viable alternative or even better then bitcoin?

Yes.  It won't be Darkcoin.  Darkcoin tweaks the algo a little.  Nobody really cares.  

Darkcoin gives people more anonymity.  There are a lot of people that care about this.  If it turns out to be that important.  A person will just figure out how to add that option to bitcoin.  No big deal.

An altcoin will challenge bitcoin when it has messaging, names, 1 second block times, asset exchanges, anonymity, games, great mobile apps and computer clients that are one click, super safe, easy to use and doesn't take a tech expert to understand, maybe a good market place, maybe lots of other things too.  Oh, and a fair distribution.  Said altcoin IF IF IF it comes out can challenge bitcoin.  Just trying to make another clone and changing a few things and calling it revolutionary doesn't do it.  In many ways I think darkcoin is better than litecoin except its name sucks.  But I really think litecoin was over valued, so that doesn't mean much.

It's open source except for DarkSend, which will be open sourced once core development is finished. Your second point is an outright lie, as DarkSend already works.

Monero has some fundamental problems that need to be solved. There is strong evidence that some, like denomination bloat, cannot be solved, rendering CN coins DOA.

No, I dont think that it can go up to 100dollars. I guess drk is just a hype, it will reach 30dollars at most and like the ltc it will again stagnate at 10dollars.

DRK is currently up ~500% in 20 days. I haven't thoroughly done the research prior but I am wondering what other coins have sustained these kind of gains and for how long.

KARMA has had a 2200%+ growth since April.  In the Litoshi range, so not the same scale, but it has been gradual rather than the effects of a pump & dump situation.  With the new announcements today it should see some additional growth as well.
