So I received a Pciex 16x riser and a 1x to 16x riser from an Hong Kong based seller on ebay (with thousands of positive feedback at 99.9%). I tried to use either one on my general purpose puter and miner with a 5870 and a 5830, since they are too close and the upper one tends to get hot (mobo is a ASRock -ALiveXFire-eSATA2) but they both fail with the riser.
I tried them (one by one) in every possible combination of slot and card, spending about one day. With the 16x extender the best I can get is the yellow exclamation point in resources (Xp64) which says that there is some memory conflict (obviously untrue since I disabled all the useless stuff in the bios and there is no conflict without the riser). The best I can get is with the 1 to 16x: the card is seen by Xp correctly but I cannot extend the desktop to that card, so I cannot mine with it. Tried to make a complete uninstall and then driver cleaning and installation of catalyst 12.1 to no avail. Any guess? Are the risers probably crap? Or maybe Xp64 is not the best thing to mess with hardware? Could I try to to solve this thing running linuxcoin in a virtual machine?

Have you shorted the presence pins on the risers?

The first is by definition not flawed.

You do NOT have to short anything, I have 18 rigs with basic risers, never did i have to 'do' anything, just plug and play, windoz and linuxcoin

the above referenced article is incorrect though, I have 5 rigs all using 890fxa-gd70 (which are listed on the above article of boards that need to be jumped) I am using 1x >16x risers on all five and do not have a problem and do not have to jump any pins
this kind of modification can be very dangerous to many components if you do not know what your doing, be careful!
also you may want to buy extenders from cablesaurus instead of on ebay, his cables are probably better than most you find on ebay

*cough* I have bought cables from CablesSaurus, and eBay, and from other places. The ones from CableSaurus are the EXACT same cables that I bought in bulk on eBay. The ONLY benefit CableSaurus has is the fact you can pay in BTC, for a 30% mark up.

Also the ability to buy with BTC is pretty cool.

Ebay can be cheap but careful to buy quality risers (there was a thread once with bad quality risers that burned), alternatively, a bit more expensive but still VERY cheap 9mart.com - 2 risers for $9, so $4.5 each with international shipping.

risers can be had even cheaper, 2.25 for 1 riser 1x -> 1x. just got to get a tool and cut out the one edge on the riser to allow putting a 16x card in there. quick search on ebay will find them. I stopped using my 16x risers because there are too many points for failure, and 16x risers require an annoying amount of force to put on, especially when you're trying to troubleshoot why your miner is having problems with 3 single gpu cards and a 1 kilowatt pc power @ cooling turbocool.
