What makes litecoin so special?
Solid historical position being first altcoin of Bitcoin
This is super wrong. There are at least 5, if not 10, other altcoins created before Litecoin.

there is not a single coin as innovative as Litecoin apart from Bitcoin...

what does Bitcoin offer that Litecoin does not?

ROFLMAO
that's what I always say: what has bitcoin to offer that litecoin does not? yes, more merchants (what is it 30k all over the world? the game has yet to start! and let's be real, so far any btc spent on the web is sold straight away by the merchant to buy fiat). what else? compared to litecoin the btc blockchain is a wrecked train (my gosh, when is the next block coming out? 2 minutes? or one hour? looks like a lottery everytime) devs (please), software? a few more apps, but still not a big deal.

I just like pretty pictures:

This bubble chart shows all cryptocoins and their total trading volume summarized of all exchanges for the last 24 hours on it. The volume is denominated in BTC. Other second currencies like USD, EUR and LTC are getting calculated back to BTC to show the right data. Mouseover the bubbles to see the exact volume!

LTC - 30734.92BTC
BTC - 203646.4BTC
NXT - 516BTC Roll Eyes

I agree with a good deal of the OP althought I would also add Securecoin, BlackCoin, and AnonCoin to the list as well.

The picture only proves a lot of speculation due to those currencies being older, that's all.
If we look at Litecoin particularly, a lot of people are dumping to get Bitcoins with occasional dead cat bounces.

The picture proves that posts such as 'Litecoin is dead' 'NXT is the best crypto' are FUD.

+1, and there is a double-meaning to this being a bubble graph Wink
Is the 24h trading volume, which make CLOAK, CRYPT, and Darkcoin seem huge, truly relevant?

That is true.

Litecoin is not dead yet, but on its way.
NXT is the best crypto, yes.

LTC currently still lives because there is a lot of (old) money invested. As soon as ppl decide either to take their profit (if bought/mined in the early days) or cut their losses (if bought at the peak) it will drop like a stone.
The reason is simple: it's old, and never evolved. It's still the old dusty LTC. The devs decided to stick with an outdated, power consuming and now ASIC friendly algo and the masses will just move away.

I don't think it will actually die, but since there is nothing new, the money will slowly be shifted to other coins. I don't think it's unrealistic to see LTC @ $5 or even lower by the end of the year.

Been around these parts awhile and constantly researching the latest and greatest, irl I am an investor/trader one rule I follow is don't trade on emotion, accept opposing views as its not about being wrong or right, I'd rather be 'wrong' and successful then 'right' and lose everything.

However I'm yet to see anything come out of this alt section that comes remotely close to being 'better' then btc/ltc, (by better I mean a greater chance of being widely adopted) and I've never really been a huge btc/ltc fan (i've often said the only thing useful that has yet come from the crypto community is the idea).

I fixed that for you Wink.

Even some of the naysayers who claim it "is dying" says that if it does die, it will be a year or two out.

True enough that said people who will remember this thread one year in the future will be impressive
That said the market right now is probably deciding how many coins it can support
In a sense which ones are innovative or unique enough to provide utility in the future so there will probably be more than one coin around in a year

Their market cap is the question though but I think LTC has enough of a head start to retain spot #2 for the year.
