Best estimate is that a scammer stole ~200 BTC from trusting Nxters
through the Asset Exchange. The amount stolen has made the fellow who scammed us look like a small-change hustler...
Thankfully, this is one kind of "scam-dal" that has not plagued the NFD world! But please read through it and take it as a reminder to be on your guard.
The trouble with the Asset Exchange is that it's 100% trust-based at the moment.
So, in the abstract,
that big Nxt AE robbery was entirely foreseeable...but still...
So please be cautious. I don't know if it's me, but there seems to be a whole new crime wave directed against Nxt & its clones. The crypto world, at least seemingly, has gotten more dangerous recently . "Safety first" is inconvenient, but it doesn't hurt.
EDIT: Please withhold your judgement about the incident until all the facts are in. I meant for this post to be a "it can happen to you..." cautionary note, and nothing more.
What are you talking about? How can you be so ignorant with the name Nxtblg?
If you had read the actual thread on nxtforum, you would see this has nothing to do with Nxt AE it originated on a forum thread fund appeal from a prominent Nxt members account. People trusted it and donated BTC. A common theory is his email was compromised and this was used to reset the passwords of his nxtforum and twitter accounts at least, as these were also used in the scam. If accurate, this was a very carefully planned hack. The Nxt the protocol and AE has nothing to do with this and remains untouched.
The scammer stole 79BTC, 49BTC from someone who was targetted specifically. The remainder were 'social trust' payments made by the scammer to give the appearance the appeal was legitimate.
tl:dr: This has nothing to do with the Asset Exchange and the Nxt Protocol itself. It was an old fashioned scam that didn't even use Nxt as the currency, let alone the protocol.
