Nope. There are a number of related threads in meta forum. This is just one of them. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=584818.0;all

There was some hack possible using those profile pics, that is why they are disabled.

when the new forum software is implemented, i am pretty sure we will regain the ability to add/change avatars again. but i recall that price tag on that being > $1 million.

The expected total cost will be about $1 million, with $350000 already paid for down payment. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=455867.msg5069851#msg5069851I've decided not to create an official announcement thread today. But I will answer some questions. ... The $350,000 was just a down payment or the full amount owed? If it is not the full amount how much more could this end up costing us? The total cost will probably be around $1 million. The $350,000 covers several months of work, after which I will evaluate the performance of Slickage Studios and choose whether or not to continue. In any case, the code will be open source, so no work will be lost.

While it would be nice, the risks just aren't worth it. Personally, I like them because it's much easier to spot a persons post, but I guess that can also be accomplished by putting some text in the Forum Profile Information field.
