I just don't understand spending the time and effort into convincing people on gaming hardware forum. There are better places for things like this than place like OCN.

Other than blindly trying out mining and adding hashing power with whatever GPU they have, I don't really see much good coming out from this target audience at this point in time.

I am certainly generalizing here, but my main point being that the time and effort can very much be used for a better target audience.

Probably, but somehow they had already been introduced and someone had to run and put out the fires from the lack of an explanation. Too little information and a lot of confused people is a bad thing for any new tech, people will get prejudiced based on nothing Wink

Topic on OCN - it's deepbit advertisement, what why you don't see "too complex for average joe" explanation about bitcoin.

And here's a bunch of people who don't get it, but seem to be optimistic and trusting by nature.

http://forums.hipinion.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=28335

edit: maybe they get it, but they aren't focusing on it.

This is where I hang out, it's a music forum theoretically. Nobody there will be a nuisance haha.

Our forum does show up near the top of a lot of google searches though so I apologize in advance if someone looks at that thread to get an idea of BTC

We are looking into BTC to see whether it is something we are comfortable with on OCN.
They shut down the thread cus they want to read up on it or something lol
OCN is filled with stupidity like this.  I don't know how there are so many fuckin' idiots in one place. Glad I don't visit the site much

Seriously though, OCN is a decent site for getting help with some stuff, but a good example was every time I asked for help, I got 2-3 helpful replies, and 30 other replies talking about stuff totally unrelated to my question. No joke.

Also, the stupidest stuff goes viral on that site, so thats probably why management got all worried

Yea. I've seen 2 other threads this week, one mentioned above. And ppl either don't give a f*ck what Bitcoin is or they can read the documentation. They're just investing on mtgox or buying mining rigs and they're happy with it.

They do not delete very popular topic (with false deepbit advertisement), but very fast delete topic with complete list of pools.

What OCN has "Upper management"? ... they are hardly big enough to have any management, what pompous, self-important know-nothings.

You think this is bad you should have seen the aussie thread about bitcoin on our largest tech and internet related site. For people who claim to like technology they are pretty much luddites when it comes to bitcoin.

This is what I've experienced as well. I would think people see "revolution", instead they see "scam". I wonder what this says about society? Probably nothing.

To be fair, at first glance Bitcoin *does* seem like a bit of a scam, especially if it's introduced in the "use CPU cycles to generate free money!" stance.  It's only once you realize that its purpose is to be an alternate currency, not a pyramid-based get-rich-quick scheme, that you truly appreciate it for what it is.  It only takes a tiny bit of reading to get to this point, but let's face it, the majority of the people involved here (gamers) don't exactly have the attention span to really care.  And honestly, I'm okay with that.  They're not ready for it, and so we shouldn't try to force it upon them.

I suspect that mentions of bitcoin in the economics (Jerry Brito's article, which is what got me into bitcoin, being perhaps the best example of this) and "black market" publications (e.g. this thread at MajorWager) are generally going to do much more for advocacy than mentions in tech publications (especially in those that have a large layperson based as opposed to, say, slashdot).

What do you guys expect? The average economics forum lurker sees Bitcoin as a scam at first glance. What is left for gamers, an audience that has no experience in economics nor the tech involved in Bitcoin.

Longtime OCN member here. OCN has gone down the shitter the past couple of years. The new moderators are just god awful. They will give you infractions and close threads just for not agreeing with you or saying something simple like "stupid". It's beyond ridiculous. The management is killing the site basically.

I found out about bitcoin from that thread though, so I'm glad someone put it up. There are a lot of idiots at OCN though, more beyond belief. But then there are some people really skillful with computers and some powerful systems.

Agreed - and I used to be a mod! (For gameservers, but I digress)

Maybe we should start a new OCN...
