I recently read that Jeff Garzik was introduced to Bitcoin by the same Slashdot article that I was. I'm guessing that it was the introduction to Bitcoin for many folks in the tech community, actually.

Anyway, figured I'd start a tribute thread to the article, because.... well, why the hell not?

So, here it is in all its glory:
http://www.slashdot.org/story/11/02/10/189246/online-only-currency-bitcoin-reaches-dollar-parity

Edit: See thread below, there was an even earlier thread on /.

Note to self: Next time BTC is at dollar parity, I will buy the lot of them!

Hmm.... now you have me wondering if that was the first article I saw as well Smiley I'm pretty sure it was the one I posted though. Obviously, I didn't pay nearly enough attention to BTC back then for sure either way!

Those who thought of building business around bitcoin are mostly millionaire today. Poor me. I missed the train... I'm still running to catch it before it take up speed.

First comment "The US dollar will soon be worthless *ducks*".

How prescient.

Remember Aaron Swartz, a 26 year old computer scientist who died defending the free flow of information.

No doubt!

Though, as I've read Beliathon ^^^ mention a bunch of times in other threads, maybe everyone here are still REALLY early adopters and 5-10 years from now, we'll be the ones with the last laugh.

Two big regrets I have from back then are:

1) Not leaving my miners running when I used to get 1BTC per day on 3 vid cards!!!

2) Not buying a shit ton of BTC.

My "excuse" for both are:

1) I felt weird about wasting so much power for something that I figured would not last.

2) It was REALLY hard to find a legitimate way to buy BTC back then.

I post this for anyone thinking the same things today.    DONT. You're a moron! Keep mining and keep buying Wink

I was going to point this one out too.

There was also this one which brought up bitcoin in the summary:
http://yro.slashdot.org/story/10/12/12/0647203/wikileaks-money-and-ron-paul

The 0.3 release story was when I heard about it too, then the wikileaks reference was the second I remember seeing on slashdot.

I think that slashdot brought a lot of people to bitcoin.

I wish I had seen it, because I might have taken BTC more seriously.
In 2010, I somehow landed on a really crude little sight selling Bitcon for Paypal for ~5 cents each, and I didn't seriously consider buying any.

Very nice. Thanks for sharing. I think there are a lot of us around here who wished they backed up the truck when BTC was a dollar.

Oddly enough it was a MTGOX story on CBS news that got my attention. I got curious and decided to read up on it. I inevitably found my way here and the rest is history as they say.

Two plus two forum? He might have been the first to post it on that forum if that's what you're talking about. Also they've had a long running thread on bitcoin since early 2011 where several people have become wealthy through investing in bitcoin.

I think that slashdot brought a lot of people to bitcoin.

The first story had a huge impact.  The price was about 0.008 USD/BTC when the story came out and it then very quickly rose in value to around 0.05-0.07 USD/BTC.  The community were quite excited about the potential of the story; even satoshi was thinking about coming out of beta as a marketing strategy.

I wish I had seen it, because I might have taken BTC more seriously.

That would have been bitcoinmarket.com.  This was the last place I ever used PayPal.  It was cute how all the trades had to be in multiples of 100 BTC.

i don 't know him personally but only by fame and through the use of the tools he crafted for us, having said that as soon as I have an occasion I will ask him for sure.
