I see so many complaints about how this altcoin or that altcoin is going to tank that I'd like to hear something positive. Are there any altcoins that actually look promising?

Sure, there are tons of them. I suggest the following coins:

<whatever coins I am holding>

I expect many here have a similar view.

Don't listen to anyone telling you to buy something. Research yourself, or be taken advantage of by those who do.

I would ask you to take a good look at AppleByte & do your research. We launched May 1, 2014.
DISCLAIMER: I am on the Dev team of AppleBytes, so I am certainly biased Smiley

We are focused a building a niche market, supporting artists of all types and started in NYC, which of course is a mecca for artists.

Here is a quick summary, you can see lots of details and lots of progress on the links below.

Steadily rising price, traded on poloniex.com, no pump & dump
Rapidly growing user community, we have 2000+ artists & art lovers on twitter, 1300+ on FB
We have given the users many places to spend their applebytes: AppleByte VISA card, Subway & ShakeShack gift cards, and our latest, the AppleByte AMC Movie Theater Card. On our Forum, you can see the promotions we have done: Places to spend AppleBytes

The coin is no simple clone, we implemented security features like Autocheckpointing & DGW2 from the start
Mining schedule over 8 years, halves approx. every two years, 1 Billion coins
We are well funded by The AppleByte Foundation & the premine that we did will be used to fund Artist scholarships over the next 10 years, so no airdrop
Devs were paid in Bitcoin (from the Indiegogo campaign), not premine
We are traded on Poloniex

AppleByte info:
Announce Thread: Announce Thread
Website: AppleByte.me
Crowd Funding Campaign: Indiegogo Campaign
Facebook: AppleByteMe FB Page
Twitter: AppleByteMe Twitter

There is a lot of work to do of course, but we are focused on longterm user community growth, and I believe make a worthy longterm investment.

The non-Btc based forks
http://mapofcoins.com/

Pretty much can be summed up into Darkcoin XC NXT and those type of coins
Although which ones will have the most utility and usage in the future is still being decided

There is a lot of money to be made, and you can make money even with a small stake. To do that, you have to play the altcoin markets, which is extremely risky unless you have inside knowledge of X, Y or Z. But you can get  absurd returns there on just one day trading.

Otherwise, BTC is the safest bet. Up until the present, it has been very easy to start with X amount of BTC and wait until LTC hit a low (say 0.015), and then convert to LTC. Soon enough, LTC rises and at that time it has been wise to convert back to BTC (say at 0.025).

Lows to highs have been between approximately 0.009 and 0.05. Take the average as 0.025.

At the moment I would go into LTC, and wait for it to get near to the mid 20s (it will get there). Then you effectively get nearly 2 times more in BTC than if you styed in BTC.

Disclaimer: It is highly speculative, and some people claim LTC is finished (despite that LTC is behaving in the same way as it has over the past 18 months).

Point of clarification: Everything is about BTC. LTC is a means to BTC, but it is the only means that has a steady record of being effective for more than a month or two.

People telling you to invest in new alts are either shills or deluded. Ignore their advice, but keep an eye on how the altcoin market operates if you like short-term pump and dump.

If you want to be safe follow those steps:

1st dig a hole in the ground.
2nd put all your money there.
3rd put the dirt you dug on top of them

This way your money will be (fairly) safe!
