I ordered 2.  Shipping was $34 USD since I ordered them together.

Total was:  $1,232.00  USD ->  $1,254.82 CAD.

I haven't received them yet, so I have no idea if I'm going to get hit with brokerage (I really hope not).

Any courier package I have received has the brokerage fees added onto to it, Canada Post sometimes they charge the brokerage and taxes sometimes they do not and speaking of taxes since it will have commercial invoice attached to the package look forward to whatever your province charges GST, HST, GST & PST  on the value of the shipment added onto that brokerage fee as well.

I do hope that the import/brokerage taxes are included in the shipping as otherwise we'd have to pay the 6% import tax and I'm pretty sure the government would want their usual 13% HST as well on top of that.

DILIGAF is probably right - ie we'll have to pay HST and the brokerage fees.

If i were you guys, i'd order them to a friend/family in the US and make them ship it to you, as a gift or with a lower value written on the package.

This is just me though. I know some people actually enjoy paying taxes

From my experience it depends who they're shipping with.  I've yet to pay brokerage/tax with USPS.  Fedex and UPS have both charged brokerage plus taxes in the past.

Fingers crossed...

Hmm, I see. It would be nice if there was a Canadian here on the forum who already received his/her BFL Single. AFAIK there aren't any yet.

I live in northern Idaho, so if you live in southern BC, you could drive four hours and pick it up Tongue

It may be valuable to note that certain items made in the USA, Mexico, Chile and Costa Rica are not subject to customs tariffs.  I am still reading through the specific schedules to find a reference but here is the documentation and couple places to check out.

THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO HST/GST - that is a federal sales tax that should be paid on all purchases that are not exempt (like some food items like milk or a cake that serves 6 or more)

Ad supported site that talks about cross boarder shopping: http://www.crossbordershopping.ca/duty-tax-import-guide/duty-tax-tips
Canada Revenue Agency Landing page for Tariffs: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tariff-tarif/2008/01-99/tblmod-1-eng.html
Section of the Tariff schedule that applies to electronics: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tariff-tarif/2008/t2008-01/ch85-eng.pdf

I learned about this last year when I was looking into buying a metal lathe.  Lathes and other metal working equipment can be tariff free if made in the USA, Mexico, Chile or Costa Rica.

Seems to depend on who is  your shipper. UPS is CRIMINAL when shipping into Canada from the US. Conversely, I have NEVER been charged ANYTHING when receiving something from the US via USPS.

Agreed, the part the Government takes is nothing compared to the "brokerage fee", but it is much more faster than USPS/Canada Post.  Too bad there are no resellers for BFL in Canada.

This is helpful for figuring out the total cost of some things: http://www.thefinalcost.com/

First shipment spent days in customs, Canada Customs didn't open it but charged $71 per Single plus a $8.50 handling fee for the package.

Second shipment was in and out of customs in a matter of hours, nothing was charged.

both packages identical, same contents same markings..

In other words, YMMV. Depends how bored Customs happens to be that day. Worst case you will be charged GST/HST/PST on the full declared value of the Single ($600USD). Typically that will be around 12%, or $72 (as FeFox described). Best case you won't be charged anything. Luck of the draw.

If you declare your mining earnings as income on your upcoming income tax return, you can deduct the Customs charges (as well as the cost of the Single) for a tax break.
