No, you are wrong for pretty obvious reasons. The shrapnel from a SAM (70 kilograms of explosives in a Buk missile) would pierce through an aircraft hull like a hot knife through butter. An airliner is absolutely not a heavy armored attack plane.

Also, it is not given that a SAM would explode under the airliner.

The shrapnel could easily have gone all the way through the plane. The body of the plane is in no way reinforced and is not designed to withstand missile attacks.

US: No evidence of direct Russian link to plane

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senior U.S. intelligence officials say they have no evidence of direct Russian government involvement in the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.

They say the passenger jet was likely felled by an SA-11 surface-to-air missile fired by Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine and that Russia "created the conditions" for the downing by arming the separatists.

The officials briefed reporters Tuesday under ground rules that their names not be used in discussing intelligence related to last week's air disaster, which killed 298 people.

They said they did not know if any Russians were present at the missile launch, and they wouldn't say that the missile crew was trained in Russia.

A senior official said the most likely explanation was the plane was shot down by mistake.

Since there was none obviously. Missile launches are detected by reconnaissance satellites (as well as radars), both Russian and American ones. They use infrared sensors detecting intense heat during a missile launch. Needless to say that the war zone in Ukraine was not deprived of these satellites' attention.

Russians have only shown their civilian radar data so far. But the military radars are much more advanced in their capabilities. Don't know if they could track an air-to-air missile, but tracking a SAM launch is absolutely possible.

Well.. that is the million dollar question. If it was a SA-11 Buk, then definitely there would have been a smoke plume 10 km+ long, which would remain in the atmosphere for a minimum of 3 hours. Strange that no one saw the plume. And we don't have any YouTube videos as well.

Ukraine army conscript, Sergey Paschenko, has got into hot water after publishing a selfie against several Buk-M vehicles he was assigned to guard on his social network page VKontakte.

Blogosphere inhabitants immediately called him “separatist” and “Russian terrorist,” and threatened to kill him. The flow of insults forced Paschenko to delete the photo from his page.

But it was already too late as even the British Daily Mail newspaper in the UK had published an article on him, accompanied by his hapless Buk-M photo.

“Is this the smoking gun? This picture has emerged of a pro-Russian rebel posing in front of the same type of Buk missile launcher that is believed to have shot down MH17,” said the Daily Mail caption to the photo.

Those who pointed out that a Ukrainian soldier cannot be a “Russian terrorist” at the same time were largely ignored.

Two aircraft carrying the remains of some of the 298 passengers who died on flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine have touched down in the Netherlands.

The planes landed in the city of Eindhoven, with relatives of the deceased and Dutch and foreign officials looking on.

The bodies of the victims, from the downed Malaysian Airlines flight, will be brought to a military base in Hilversum in the Netherlands. 193 of the passengers who died were Dutch.

Experts will work to put names to the bodies, a process that could take months.

Since March, 432 people have been killed in the Donetsk region, 36 of them women and 6 children, the local health department has said. Over 1,000 people have been wounded.

On Tuesday alone, seven people were injured in Donetsk and four in the town of Gorlovka.
