Highly unethical?

Highly!

LOL

psy, Let's get on the same page, so we can reach an understanding:

...
So you are one of those guys that clicks links without checking where it takes you by just hovering the pointer over it before clicking...
I wouldn't login to my bank account in your computer that's for sure!

Adf.ly links (when used without the end-users* knowledge) are something highly unethical, which is called link-hijacking

*end-user (in this context) = Person posting the link, not the person clicking.

Here is my point, quite simply:
  • Some admins use it on forums and the "hi-jacked" links are added without the end-user (who posted the link) being aware his/her link is being altered.

If you do not understand the above is wrong (highly unethical), then there is nothing I can do to help you, at this time.

So, what you are saying is that in a site that isn't user generated content it's perfectly fine to use adf.ly?  Roll Eyes
You surely know that the internet is composed by several types of web properties being user generated content sites just one of those types, don't you?  Shocked

So, using your reasoning we should also put an end to bitcoin because people use it to sell highly unethical stuff?

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.
Advertised sites are not endorsed by the Bitcoin Forum. They may be unsafe, untrustworthy, or illegal in your jurisdiction.

you're right as far as you say link hi-jacking is highly unethical,
what i don't get is, why it makes adf.ly (or similar) a bad service.

it's those forum-admins/-operators who act unethical, not the ad-services they abuse.
adf.ly, or linkbucks, to name anotherone don't hi-jack anything, they don't hide what they have to offer
and they don't force you to use them, nor to show full-page ads to clickers before showing any content, you could also decide to use framed ads, but you'll earn less (even less than you get anyway Cheesy).

How are they abusing the service if it's the service who provides the script to turn all external links into ad-links?
I would say they are just using a feature of the service, not abusing it!

well, the 'abuse' in Bit_Happy's example is,
that they do it without telling the end-user about it (where end-user is the person posting the link, not the one clicking it, if i got that right).

it's not actually an abuse of the ad-services, which provide those scripts for ethical use.

anyway,
i think it's a cool idea, even though it's not new
and services like that will pop up sooner or later anyway,
so do it!

Exactly! If something they are abusing the end-users, not the ad-service.

This is what I said earlier:

re: adf.ly users
If you want to pollute your own blog/website with adf.ly that is your choice to make.

    * Some admins use it on forums and the "hi-jacked" links are added without the end-user being aware his/her link is being altered.
^^^
I have serious issues with people who do that, as should most "decent people", IMO.

We agree almost 100%, Bitlex.

...as a friend who is trying to warn me about possible outcomes of my project. Smiley I like to take everyones opinions into consideration, and I definitely see the reasoning behind yours. Your opinion is valid...

Thanks, nice to meet you Ryland.  Smiley

BitLex, made a good point that the fault lies in the site admins, not the software. Also, you seem to have established a demand for your project. Someone mentioned a "download service" type usage and there (for example) I agree the ads would be expected.
In many other places, those ad.fly ads are truly "crap" and that will always be my opinion.

On the bright side:
  • (Legit) Ads are a huge industry and a great sector for Bitcoin to grow into, IMO. Ryland, and others, can help Bitcoin grow and make profits with ad related projects.

So, using your reasoning...

Perhaps I missed your answer:
Are you above 14 years old psy, and do you have a decent grasp on the English language?

re: ad.fly
Here is an example of someone who shares my opinion:

Is this a plugin to make money or make sure none of your users ever come back to your forum?  I'm confused... oO;

No, my son is older than 14, which means probably older than you...  Shocked

You should spend less time in forums because you really seem to think the internet is just forums...

And i really like how you ignored everything i said and went to the insult part that i was trying to ignore.
That really shows who the child is! YOU!

PS: It's sad that you have to go to other forums to find someone who "shares your opinion"... The only problem is that you don't seem to have one, you just steal the opinions from others!

I think this is a very good idea! I don't see any problems with it at all.

Adds are everywhere on the web (torrents, 4shared, rapidshare, ...), and this is pretty fair since all this services are free!

What Bit_Happy considers "hijacking" I consider a reasonable way to charge your users, only instead of charging money you're charging a very little time of their eyeballs. And you're not doing it for nothing, you're helping to bring to the user that content he wanted and clicked on your link for.

About spammers... they are the "unethical" ones (just like with e-mails), not the service providers.

Post #17 is inaccurate, and shows a genuine lack of attention to detail:

Would you honestly want your son to see the way you treat other people?
Seriously,
  • Would you honestly want your son to see the way you treat other people?

Yes, he should know how to treat guys like you from the start!

Now, get over it!

btw, don't you know what an EDIT button is? Stop double posting!
You should give more attention to detail yourself, because when you are writing a reply you have a list with all previous replies and a link to insert a quote in your reply, no need for double posts!

Anyone have any pricing suggestions? What should I charge advertisers? What should I pay... uh... shorteners?

Prices charged to advertisers in adf.ly.
Please note that these values change daily in their website but it should give you a general idea of the price.
If you want i can get you also the Leaderboard prices and the value they pay to publishers.
Probably will be better to send it to you in a PM or else it will be a big wall of text!
Or maybe you can just go to their website and see for yourself. Not sure if those pages need login or not.

It's not a bad idea.

Modders who link their mods usually use something like this to earn a bit for their work. What's wrong with that?
