A considerable portion of the current signature campaigns offer some sort of a bonus for using ref links, so if there was a problem with them we'd have heard about it sooner. Some may discourage them for being slightly misleading (like me, particularly in posts, which is probably the source of your question), but if it's a signature ad then people know that it's sponsored in some way anyway.
