Are you sure they didn't say that about the Ice Giants instead, Uranus and Neptune? As it happens, I just finished seeing the latest Crash Course Astronomy video that came out today, where they mention that phenomenon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hIwD17Crko ("Uranus & Neptune: Crash Course Astronomy #19", 12m18s). Studies apparently show that the pressure inside these planets can break up methane molecules, and force the carbon atoms into diamond crystals - maybe enough to form an ocean of liquid diamond at the bottom of the mantle.
