OK, all is installed and now I want to run cgminer but there are lots of tweaking that can be done.

What settings should I begin with to run it for a couple of days to see how well it is working?
I'm using this machine to surf as well, what intensity would be good?
What is the safe high end target for overclocking while using this pc?
Is 70C a good target maximum? Is it better to use gpu-fan at a set speed versus using auto-fan?

No load yet:
Code:

Adapter 1 - ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series
            Sensor 0: Temperature - 43.00 C

Try a few intensity settings and go with what works best for you.  Try 725-825 for a gpu range to start with.  Go with 75C for a target temp.  Use auto-fan & auto-gpu.  Adjust all settings to suit your needs.

I just use the default.  It does a pretty good job of balancing intensity with the temp.  I'm using an ati 6750.

70-75 depending on how hot you'll like it to run. Personally, I run mine at 76*C. Intensity -d if you don't want to see any lag, 6-10 depending on how much lag you can tolerate. I run mine at 10 and my browsing is unhindered.

The terminal that it's running in has become unresponsive and there was this alert just before the terminal problem:
Pool 0 not providing work fast enough

Checking the pool hashing is at 0MH/s crap.

You will see that pool 0 or 1 depends on how many you have setup all the time it is really not much to worry about unless it actually stops hashing then you need to look into it, try lowering the clock to 800 from the 825 you have there now as the unresponsive terminal suggests a hanging of the video card you may even need to reboot to get started again.

I lowered the gpu clocks to 800 and changed the intensity from d to 8.   Grin

Code:
cgminer -o http://127.0.0.1:9332 -u tunnelrat -p spelunking -k phatk -v 2 -w 128 -I 8 -g 1 --gpu-fan 45 --gpu-engine 800 --gpu-memclock 300

Try mining at stock for a few hours and increase in 10MHZ increments.
When you hang, back off by 5 until its 100%. A crashed miner doesnt help anyone.
