d'oh, removed my IP.

in any case... no reason to have more than one incoming connection from one peer, eh?

Seems they are missing this bit:

Code:
##  If you run multiple nodes on a LAN, there's no need for ##
 ##  all of them to open lots of connections.  Instead       ##
 ##  'connect' them all to one node that is port forwarded   ##
 ##  and has lots of connections.                            ##

I've noticed this as well, collected some information here:
https://gist.github.com/laanwj/2a89da909bf161c7e4c2

* It appears that all the hosts are from Linode, and that they open multiple connections (about 5-6)
* They claim NODE_NETWORK, but none of them has a sync height, so they're not actually requesting blocks (and will probably also not respond to getblocks requests, although I haven't tried)
* I've enabled verbose logging for them, and from what I've seen they don't ever emit any commands apart from pong and version. They just listen for invs.
* They do not accept incoming connections at least on the standard ports.

Crazy bot  Angry
Of course, owners of full-nodes have to limit such connections.
At least everyone has a right to do it.

Yeah, I noticed that also, w/ tcpdump.  Doesn't seem *especially* malicious, though I assume it has an impact on the 'anonymity' of it all.

At least it's not like those 'BQS' or other randoms that spam out the:

2014-08-27 16:16:47 ProcessMessages(ping, 0 bytes) : Exception 'CDataStream::read() : end of data' caught, normally caused by a message being shorter than its stated length
2014-08-27 16:16:47 ProcessMessage(ping, 0 bytes) FAILED peer=1124
2014-08-27 16:25:49 ProcessMessages(ping, 0 bytes) : Exception 'CDataStream::read() : end of data' caught, normally caused by a message being shorter than its stated length
2014-08-27 16:25:49 ProcessMessage(ping, 0 bytes) FAILED peer=1124
2014-08-27 16:34:50 ProcessMessages(ping, 0 bytes) : Exception 'CDataStream::read() : end of data' caught, normally caused by a message being shorter than its stated length
2014-08-27 16:34:50 ProcessMessage(ping, 0 bytes) FAILED peer=1124

2014-08-27 16:43:51 ProcessMessage(ping, 0 bytes) FAILED peer=1124

Either way, someone must be monitoring them.... since it took about an hour for activity to resume once I removed my firewall & they have stopped attempting to connect to my IP now after about an hour of having a constant tcpkill going, which I'm going to stop now..

I went ahead and just limited 8333 to one connection per IP, but they could still connect 11 times.

It was;

106.186.114.132
66.228.48.107
106.187.41.230

We should certantly prioritize bumping duplicate source IPs when we implement doing that— (I have a long list of criteria written up for that).

The reason we really shouldn't just ban is because there often are many independent nodes behind a NAT and it would be impolite to unnecessarily deny them connectivity.  In at least one case there is a whole country behind a single IP.

Opening up multiple connections is really only the first and most boring of abusive behaviors people can / have been engaging in... there are quite a few parties which are now trying to connect constantly to every reachable host on the network and wasting a lot of connectivity. If we implement measures to address the bulk resource consumption more generally the repeats on one IP will also be approved as a side effect.

Here's an example: entire USA customer base of Virgin Broadband (a CDMA wireless carrier) was (maybe still is, this is device-dependent) behind a couple of IPv4 addresses geolocating to Sandy,UT.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier-grade_NAT

Depending on the internal mechanics of the CGN two connections from the same IP on the internal IP space could show as coming from the same or different address on the global IP space. There were special provisions for correct handling of legacy protocols like FTP and RSH.

What do you mean by "take care"? Virgin is just a retail brand that resells the wireless bandwidth provided by Sprint, which it turn uses equipment developed/installed/maintained by Alcatel/Lucent/Ericsson.

Oups. Sorry. My bad English.
Not care, but responsibility.
We see all users behind the NAT as one user and kick/ban him
We can't distinguish with guarantee a situation of one or several users.
Each node has a right to kick connection or ban IP, even it is IP for whole continent

Obviously they have the "right to kick/ban". The question: is do they really want to do it? Stupid anti-DoS defenses are actually quite common way how people loose market reach of their web portals when their target audience moves to a different way of accessing the Internet.

We can not force owners to do it. We can not prevent them to do this.
It is not the layer of bitcoin protocol.
Everybody is free to allow/disallow such connections. No other rules. Point.
