The squiggles in the corners sort of reminded me of a QR code, so I tried playing with the image, but couldn't get a QR scan off it. Tried overlaying on itself a few ways, squishing it and seeing if anything appeared in the flames, nada. I do think the flames could maybe hold a message. The little squiggly lines on the inside border of the chess board intrigued me, looks almost like an arrow in the upper-left and lower-right corners. The poem "The Phoenix and the Turtle" definitely seems related to the image.

wow i love this. just went through the thread. so the puzzle is still unsolved. Hmmm, can someone confirme. The private key associated with this puzzle is "somehow" hidden in the picture posted ( https://twitter.com/coin_artist/status/583979278238359552) by coin_artist. am i right?? just wondering what steps we d need to do and what exactly we 'd have to "solve".

Your QR-code association makes sense. Key and the keyhole are in similar position on the image as is thye position of the asymmetric 4th corner on the usual QR image: Also, some flames are obscured by the leaves of the ivy, and only with QR code redundancy on partial image damage they can be restored.

I've been working on a similar premise, though it seemed to me that the Phoenix's eye was the alignment helper. While all other eyes in the painting are simple coloured blobs, the Phoenix's eye is extremely dramatic, detailed, and geometric.

The seven rays connection seems promising. In particular: "In early Christian iconography, the dove of the Holy Ghost is often shown with an emanation of seven rays, as is the image of the Madonna, often in conjunction with a dove or doves.[1][21] The Monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai, circa 565 CE, shows the Transfiguration of Christ in the apse mosaic, with "seven rays of light shining from the luminous body of Christ over the apostles Peter, James and John."[4] In the present day Byzantine-style St. Louis Cathedral in Missouri, the center of the sanctuary has an engraved circle with many symbols of the Holy Trinity. The inscription reads: "Radiating from this symbol are seven rays of light representing the seven gifts of the Holy Ghost."" It fits with the themes of Christian mythology and the trinity. The dove could also be connected through this, as in "the dove of the Holy Ghost is often shown with an emanation of seven rays, as is the image of the Madonna, often in conjunction with a dove or doves".

I don't think OSpEZtA is relevant to the puzzle. It's automatically generated by Imgur and can't be customized.

I'm just offering a random idea ... If the 9x7 chess board points to a year in chess history then the big game would be between Botvinnik vs Petrosian 1963 in Moscow 22 match games were played between them. here they are: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?tid=54394

Sigh. I wake to this, hung over on a weekend... now I have NO choice but to spend every waking moment puzzling over this. Too intriguing. The irregular white borders trouble me. If when stretched they create a QR code, that'd make me smile. Yeah, that's a nope. Anyone have super-strength coffee and aspirin please?
