But what about punishing them for not searching or at least not checking the first page of this sub where there is usually at least two threads answering their queries?

A new joiner may not know much about the bitcointalk rule, but they should have learned to read the sticky threads.

That's a fair reason, but there's no need for it, believe me I've got expirience in running a forum board.

yeah, people look for the slightest reasons to react to something.. especially the people here who are always anti-authoritarian.

if it were me, i'd make it a requirement that the newbies read for most common FAQ questions before being able to register an account.

IMO, they should be asked to read the FAQs and then be required to get through a short and simple multiple choice quiz on activity, forum rank, posting limit, etc. before they can actually make their very first post.

They still wouldn't read it or take any of it in, and even if they were 'forced' to read it it really wouldn't stop stupid threads in here being created so there's probably very little that can be done about it to be honest.

If it bothers admins (and this is not the case), the only solution is punishing such behavior
It's just common sense: when you're new somewhere you search for habits before asking about them

Moreover when the rules are on the top of the page on which you send your thread!
"Search then post". Not the other way around!

Viewing it from another perceptive, the essence of the bitcointalk FAQs will be posted in many different websites and each new users will voluntarily read it lol.

I've never understood why there isn't an instant link and lock to the question, or a macro'ed answer reminding them to search for the answer first. If I'm made mod I'd be cleaning this stuff up.

Obviously, these people are more concerned about activity than quality of posts.

How about no activity for the two week period?

To be fair it took me a decent amount of time before I understood anything about activity increasing.  This was mainly due to me only ever being in bitcoin discussion/altcoins for the most part. And when I did go into the other sections where it had a sticky about it I just didn't notice it as I am so used to ignoring sticky things because I generally don't care about them.

At one point I did ask about it and I did try to google it and just couldn't get answers I needed. But I know about it now and it would help if it was included in the "Help" section in the main toolbar on this site but it isn't in there at all.

it wouldn't solve all issues, but if they are given the information right away, it'll deter at least some of the repetitive posts.
