It has to be something with a positive idea for outsiders. Satoshi's last message (is he dead?) or reward getting split (Am I less of an early adopter now?) are both sad events at least at first sight. Parity day is a USA thing, only and very technical. What if rate goes down to parity again? I vote for bitcoin pizza day! Pizza is positive. If pizzerias offer pizza for bitcoin for that one day only and if it is with the help of some local geeks, this could help get bitcoins to brick and mortar business in general, too. And the pizza bakers might like the story of those two now super expensive pizzas

that is the thing! bitcoin pizza day! on that day every bitcoin believer must order a pizza for bitcoins! Looking forward to the day I get 10.000 pizzas for two bitcoins What would be great about that is we could track the purchasing power of bitcoin against the value of a pizza. Pizza is likely to be around a really long time, so future generations would likely be able to continue to celebrate. What I like about is that we could schedule local meetups at pizzeria's. It will be a great way to create some IRL bitcoin actions. Every major city could pick a pizzeria and as it grows bigger and bigger we will see the price of pizza in Bitcoin come down with an ever bigger crowd. Is pizza something that is eaten all over the world? Would people in just about every country be able to participate?

Since bitcoin has an event every 210,000 blocks whose timing roughly correlates to an occurance once every four years, how about timing the event to one fourth of that 210,000 blocks...
Why does it have to be every year? Why can't it be every four years like the Olympics or the World Cup. It will make it a more special celebration people will look forward to. I like it having a floating date instead of pinning it down, and will make it something that will generate a lot of buzz and anticipation as the date approaches. That may make it like the flash mob phenomena in some ways. /edit the best celebrations are not those we plan and organize ahead of time but those which just happen... organically; spontaneously. Yeah but a fixed date allow us to put it in the Wiki, and a fixed date is easier to remember. Unless its my anniversary. Better to have a floating date for that!

On the block reward change dates (is there a better name?)
Yeah its the day everyone in the Bitcoin community holds their breath that the drop doesn't cause the hash rate to plunge and enter a downward spiral as people sell out and shutdown their rigs... Followed by a 51% attack launched by the black-ops arm of some national intelligence agency looking to kill the greatest currency ever devised by man.

We already have the Bitcoin Pizza and everything.
Shit you just gave me a huge idea. On the Bitcoin day, the client can change the startup splash screen to a pizza. And maybe embed some kind of other creative easter eggs. Maybe a dialog can pop up with a link to meetup.com/bitcoinpizzaday so people can find where their local meetup is that day!

This is hugely stupid idea, and if you knew how the average person reacts when the software they're using to manage financial transactions suddenly starts doing all kinds of crazy shit for no apparent reason, you'd understand why.
