He offered to do some work for me, seemed pretty clued up on what he needed to do, I was paying a good price for an easy job (so he could have just done it) but decided he would try and take over my server and steal my bitcoins instead.

He gave my what was apparently his phone number and his ID card

Not sure if this is his or not but this scammer needs to be stopped.

In the end I just rebuilt the server... so no harm done really, bitcoins are bitcoins.

Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

This guy has tried scams on different accounts, used the same ID.

He probably has many other accounts, reporting each other. Can't deal with Newbie's without safety Smiley

General rule of thumb, is that if you're a new user, and you choose to do business with another new user:

1. You're going to get scammed
2. You're a scammer yourself

Of course there are exceptions, but do you really want to take that risk? Just use escrow next time: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=276897.0

Recommended Exchanges: Binance.com | CelsiusNetwork
GPG ID: 4880D85C | 1% Escrow | 8% IPO/ICO Escrow services Temporarily Closed | Bitcointalk is the ONLY place where I use this name (No Skype/IRC/YIM/AIM/etc) | 13CsmTqGNwvFXb7tD9yFvJcEYCDTB8wQTS | Beware of these SCAM sites! | *Sponsored Link
