You'll get more connection after some time.
Actually there is a partial implementation of 'SuperBoot' in the 9.3 wallet which is supposed to give lightning fast connection and a very strong network.
The Bitcoin client by default will send garbage recommended nodes. BIGcoin only sends tried and tested nodes. This actually a part of a bigger picture which is supposed to isolate the bad nodes.
Unfortunately it did not work completely, so we did not advertise it.
The devs will fix it whenever they get time.

I also have only 3 connections. Probably that's because there aren't really much active nodes. The hashrate also looks like there are only 2-3 GPU miners active.

People, please open port 14351.
I was testing SuperBoot, and the most of the ports of peers are closed.

SuperBoot BIGcoin changes the behavior of how recommended nodes are sent to newly connected peers.
Instead of sending old, stale collected garbage addresses randomly, the BIGcoin client only sends a list of established and working outbound connections to getaddr requests; the result -- strong network connectivity. Practically each node is connected to every node on the network and limited by the total number of connects that the wallet can make.
This reduces chances of forming a forked chain and prevents a lost transaction.
If you notice, you'll see a lot of 'dual' connections; i.e. with a single node you'll see 2 connection being formed, one inbound and one outbound. This is to check if the advertised port by the connected node is open, and because an outbound connection has been established, this node will be in the list of suggested nodes.
Bad node isolation
The original intention of making SuperBoot is not good network connectivity, but bad node isolation. Bad node isolation is one of the prerequisites for ShotFork to work properly.
By forwarding only outbound connections, only the tried and tested nodes which are known to behave correctly are forwarded, otherwise the nodes are disconnected; effectively the network has a tendency of keeping the attacker at by not accepting for forwarding it.
Current status: unimplemented. Bad node isolation works along with RapidPing and DistrbutedPing (upcoming technologies) for ultimate affect and network security. peers.dat will be removed in the future.
Bitcoin stale port bug fixed Bitcoin has a bug in the way it handles ports in the recorded peers entry (peers.dat).
For a new advertised IP:port, if there is an existing entry of the same IP but for a different port, then the newly advertised IP:port is not added; thus a user who changes ports will get a loss of connectivity, same can be said for NAT users which are running multiple wallets on different computers.
Now the newly advertised IP:port combination is considered separately and is added.
