i am trying to rescan but every time i open terminal to paste in code, bitcoin qt just opens and i cant paste. how do i open terminal without the client opening?

How do you "open terminal"?

The command "bitcoin-qt -rescan" needs to be run in your operating system's terminal, not the debug window in Bitcoin-Qt.

If you're doing this locally the -rescan option should be fine. I was doing it to a VPS and my connection dropped midway through and I had to start all the way from the beginning. Then the connection dropped again Sad My advice is if you're doing it on a VPS also specify -daemon to avoid that problem with bitcoind!
