I recently launched a website that enables you pay transit fares with bitcoin. This service is available for several US cities, and the list is growing as I find time to research more transit systems in other cities.

http://bitfare.org.

The site is pretty simple at the moment, but if people find this useful then I might be inclined to add more features. For example, if one particular fare card system proves to be popular, then I could try to build an automatic interface for that system.

As an introductory offer, we will round up to the nearest whole integer for the USD/BTC rate (right now that would be 6.0) and will fulfil small orders prior to receiving bitcoins.

Enjoy!

This project has been on the back burner for a bit, but I recently made a few improvements to the site, including:

  • New web forms available for selected smart card systems, making it easier to reload these cards. Currently available for the Orca Card in Seattle, WA and the Clipper Card in Bay Area, CA.
  • Current exchange rate is displayed on the site
  • Added a few more cities to the list

Hope you find this service useful. Feel free to send me any feedback you have on the site!

It's been long overdue, but I now have a SSL certificate and now offer (require, actually) https access to the site. Check it out:

https://bitfare.org

In other news, I added new a form to semi-automate Charlie Card reloads (Boston, MA).

Happy riding!

Update

Effective yesterday, the $5 fee for NYC Metrocards is waived! You now just pay the face value of the card based on the current exchange rate. We have 30-day unlimited ride cards in stock ($113). You can order other types of Metrocards, although that takes longer.
