It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

Do you have the latest version (6.2)? There is a critical bugfix in it for a denial-of-service attack.

you probably should just download the transactions thru your web browser and put it in your client.

How many connections are you getting (bottom right corner, hover over computer icon or icon with bars, like cell phone signal indicator)?

Thinking about deleting the database and letting it redownload, would that help?

It's blk0001.dat and blkindex.dat right?

Yup, that's the brute-force way.  delete those two and restart.

You might first want to try, for shits and giggles, -rescan
e.g.,  bitcoin-qt -rescan

I also had the problem that 0.6.2 didn't download any blocks after installation.
I am using the linux version on Centos 6

It had 8 connections to the bitcoin network but no blocks downloading.

It started working when I manually told it to connect to another nodes

./bitcoin-qt -addnode=91.210.181.21

I think there is a bug in there somewhere.

The OP already said he is running 0.6.2

0.6.2 supposedly fixes a theoretical attack that could cause clients to not keep up with the network but it seems to contain a bug that results in it not keeping up with the network .

I have the same problem.  --rescan didn't help.  I just deleted the blockchain.  It's re-downloading now.

Error?  You mean the warning saying that it hasn't finished catching up?

So, step 1.  Make sure you are on version 0.6.2.

Step 2.  The blockchain is large ... 2 GB.  Check disk space to ensure you aren't running out of space.

Step 3.  How many connections?  Hover over the "ascending bars" in the bottom right of the client.   It will tell you how many connections you have.
